SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Reporting to the Parks District Supervisor, Playgrounds, performs inspections and audits of play structures and performs general maintenance related to the repair / replacement / maintenance of components and the required ground maintenance activities to play structures, splash pads, tennis courts, bocce courts and other multipurpose courts.

Work includes performing duties related to playground safety inspections; Provides related technical information and assistance to supervisors;

installs, repairs, and cleans playground equipment; works with contractors and manufacturers on proper playground installation.

Repairs, replace, inspects and performs other necessary actions to keep playground equipment in compliance with CSA and AODA regulations and manufacturers specifications.

Repairs, replace, inspects and performs other necessary actions to spray pads, skateparks, tennis courts, basketball courts and bocce courts.

Maintain spray pad to the R.RO.Regulation 565 Public Pools to the C’ class standard.

Carries out in-depth safety inspections and audits on playground equipment in accordance with CAN / CSA-Z614-20 Children’s Play spaces and Equipment Standard.

GENERAL DUTIES

Performs inspections as per regulations of the current CSA of playground equipment.

Responds to and investigates various emergency conditions and requests from Police, Fire, Emergency Services, Risk Management and various Provincial Ministries to evaluate situational requirements and where practicable, initiates corrective action within established policies.

Perform and manages monthly safety inspections at each playground in assigned area or where directed.

Cleans and sanitizes play equipment and splash pads; performs graffiti removal; performs routine clean-ups keeping areas free of trash, debris, glass, needles, bodily fluids, algae and etc.

Maintaining and implementation of digital record keeping program (City Reporter) related to playgrounds, splash pads, tennis and multipurpose courts.

Coordinate and oversee contracted work.

Maintains records of inspections and manufacturers information. Performs inventory and analysis of all City playgrounds and provides information to supervisor to review and prioritize.

Orders replacement parts, supplies and materials for routine repair and maintenance. Stocks work vehicle with tools and materials to allow for immediate repairs.

Performs maintenance to the protective safety surface such as redistribution of wood fibre / pea stone.

Completes journal of daily activities.

Operates and maintains hand / power, and shop tools, such as table, band saw, belt sander, radial arm saw, circular, chop, and mitre saw, torches, drill press, power drill, router, pipe cutter, air compressor, generators, welder and metal fabricating equipment and multi meter.

Operates light and medium and equipment such as weed eaters, blowers, power washers, trash pumps, chainsaws, skid steer, front end loader and forklift to perform maintenance needs or repairs.

Repairs, replaces, rebuilds, welds and fabricates parts to repair items for playgrounds, splash pads, tennis and multipurpose courts.

Performs onsite mobile welding repairs to playground equipment, splash pads, tennis post, basketball backboards, rims, posts.

fencing, swing gates, ornamental garbage containers, picnic tables, Christmas tree stands.

Performs electrical repairs and troubleshoots as it pertains to splash pad PLCs, timers, fuses, sensors and valves.

Troubleshoots and performs minor plumbing repairs and value replacement and repairs to splash pads.

Maintains and performs daily / weekly maintenance to fountain systems.

Inventories and orders fountain chemical supplies as required.

Ensures that students assigned to the works crew are provided with and instructed on the use of the appropriate equipment, materials and / or procedures required to perform the assigned duties.

Ensures that all employees perform work in accordance with applicable Health and Safety legislation and adheres to all City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures.

Ensures that infractions are reported, and appropriate action is recommended to the Supervisor for those employees who do not work in compliance with legislation, policies and procedures.

Drives a service vehicle and performs labour activities as may be required in support of program delivery or direct response to complaint resolution, as appropriate (e.

g., load and unload equipment and debris as required / directed).

Performs other duties as assigned which are directly related to the major responsibilities of the job.

Works in accordance with the provisions of applicable health and Safety legislation and all City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Technical knowledge required related to the duties listed above.

2. Basic knowledge and experience in the use of carpentry tools.

3. Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and effectively independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.

4. Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate with various stakeholders : city staff, members of the public, contractors and suppliers both verbally and in writing

5. Previous experience directing, coaching and mentoring subordinate staff and working with crews to foster a positive working environment

6. Knowledge of relevant legislation such as Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations including W.H.M.I.S. legislation.

7. Must have current CPRA Certification in Playground Inspections and Maintenance.

8. Welding Training from Weldtech Training, Mohawk College or approved equivalent

9. Experience in a computerized environment. Working knowledge of Word, Excel and Microsoft Outlook.

10. Demonstrated ability to operate tools in a safe manner, including shop and power tools such as table, band saw, belt sander, radial arm saw, circular, chop, and mitre saw, grinder, torches, drill press, power drill, router, pipe cutter, air compressor, generators, welder and metal fabricating equipment and multi meter.

11. Certificates in Chainsaw, Forklift, Confined Space Entry and Fall Arrest are an asset, or must be obtained before the end of the probation period.

12. Working knowledge of PLC controllers for splash pads

13. Must possess a Class "G" Driver's Licence.

THIS POSITION REQUIRES A VALID CLASS "G" DRIVERS LICENCE AND PROOF THEREOF IS REQUIRED AFTER HIRE.

SALARY : Salary Grade H

HOURS : 40 per week

THE INCUMBENT SHALL COMPLY WITH ALL HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICIES AND PRACTICES FOR THIS POSITION AND THE WORKPLACE.
