Job Title: Forklift Operator
Job Description
This role is a hands-on warehouse and general labor position that involves operating a sit-down forklift, performing shipping and receiving, moving a variety of materials, and completing all paper-based picking tasks. You work both indoors and outdoors, handle products ranging from light to heavier materials, and regularly perform manual lifting and hand bombing of product. You also interact with walk-in customers at the warehouse, assisting with order picking and supporting various tasks around the facility while maintaining a strong focus on safety, accuracy, and communication.
Responsibilities
- Operate a sit-down forklift to move, load, and unload materials safely within the warehouse and yard.
- Perform shipping and receiving duties, including loading and unloading trucks, verifying paperwork, and organizing incoming and outgoing materials.
- Complete all paper-based picking, accurately reading pick tickets and documents to locate and prepare orders.
- Manually lift and move materials, including frequent hand bombing of product, with regular lifting up to 50–60 lbs and occasional team lifts for heavier items.
- Pick orders for customers who come directly to the warehouse, ensuring orders are complete, accurate, and ready in a timely manner.
- Support general warehouse duties, including organizing stock, maintaining a clean and safe work area, and assisting with odd tasks as requested around the facility.
- Use sit-down and reach forklifts to pick from pallets and racks, following safe operating procedures at all times.
- Communicate clearly with team members and supervisors to coordinate workflow, clarify instructions, and address issues as they arise.
- Adapt to an environment that can be busy and somewhat unorganized by staying flexible, proactive, and willing to help where needed.
- Follow all safety guidelines when working indoors and outdoors, including navigating uneven cement surfaces in the yard and working in dusty conditions.
- Provide respectful, efficient service when interacting with customers and colleagues in the warehouse.
Essential Skills
- At least 1 year of warehouse experience in a similar hands-on environment.
- At least 1 year of experience with heavy lifting, including regular lifting up to 50–60 lbs.
- Valid AB certification to operate a sit-down forklift.
- Experience operating sit-down and reach forklifts, including picking from pallets and racks.
- Ability to perform frequent manual material handling and hand bombing throughout the shift.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to read and understand pick tickets and written instructions in English.
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors.
- Comfort working in a dusty environment.
- Reliability to work full-time, daytime hours with some required overtime.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, occasionally unorganized setting and adapting to changing priorities.
- Ability to collaborate with an experienced team and receive direct feedback in a straightforward work culture.
- Capability to commute reliably to a location that may require driving or a longer walk from public transit.
- Interest in long-term employment with opportunities for advancement within warehouse operations or into other roles such as inside or counter sales.
- Willingness to learn additional warehouse processes and take on broader responsibilities over time.
Work Environment
You work in a warehouse located at the back of a retail store, spending approximately 90% of your time indoors and going outdoors as needed to retrieve product from the yard. The outdoor area includes uneven cement surfaces, and the environment can be dusty due to the nature of the materials. About a quarter of your time is spent on forklifts, with the majority of the day focused on heavy lifting and general warehouse work. The schedule runs Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with an hour for lunch and some required overtime. The team consists of experienced warehouse professionals and the culture is straightforward and direct, so clear communication and a resilient attitude help you succeed. The workplace can be somewhat unorganized at times, so you need to be comfortable going with the flow and adjusting to changing tasks. Reliable transportation is important, as public transit may require a 20–30 minute walk to and from the warehouse, including in winter conditions. Typical warehouse attire suitable for a dusty, construction-focused environment is expected, along with appropriate safety gear as required.
