The Department of Rural Development (DRD) invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. Candidates with a PhD and interdisciplinary expertise in the social sciences are encouraged to apply. The DRD administers interdisciplinary programs, including undergraduate degrees in Rural and Community Studies and graduate programs in Rural Development. Established in 1999, the Master of Arts and Graduate Diploma programs are policy-focused and have undergone significant development. The DRD maintains a longstanding, collegial partnership with the Rural Development Institute at Brandon University (www.brandonu.ca/rdi). This position offers additional opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborative research and service.

We are seeking a candidate whose research and teaching expertise encompasses one or more of the following domains: community development, research methodologies, gender and development, women’s health policies, Indigenous peoples’ development, environmental change, and program planning and evaluation. While geographic focus is open, Brandon University emphasizes engagement with rural and northern regions of western Canada. The Department of Rural Development has also established robust teaching and research collaborations with institutions in Africa, Latin America, and Europe.

The successful candidate will join a department characterized by a collaborative environment committed to advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization across research, pedagogy, and community engagement. Multiple professional mentorship opportunities are available to the successful candidate. Willingness to participate collegially in service to the department, university, and the community that it serves will be expected.

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering instruction across undergraduate and graduate curricula and will have opportunities to supervise students in the thesis-based track of the MA program. In addition to contributing within their area of expertise, the appointee will be expected to teach established courses at the undergraduate level (e.g., Introduction to Community Development) and graduate level (e.g., Rural Community Development and Research Methodology). The candidate must demonstrate a clearly defined, and fundable, research program.

Qualifications: Candidates with a PhD and interdisciplinary expertise in the social sciences are encouraged to apply. Applicants may seek to establish an experiential/traditional equivalency to the Doctorate degree and are invited to contact the Office of the Dean of Arts on how to establish equivalent academic or professional credentials.
