Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Senior Technical Engineer/Officer - Mechanical Engineering.

Job Overview

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Senior Engineer / Technical Officer - Mechanical Engineering.

Reporting to the Manager, DNNP Owners Engineering, this position is responsible for the following.

Key Accountabilities

  • Serve as the System Responsible Engineer for the turbine-generator and associated auxiliary systems through design, procurement, construction, commissioning, turnover, and early operation of the BWRX-300 plant.
  • Provide technical oversight of steam turbine, generator, excitation, lubrication and seal-oil, gland sealing, moisture separation and reheating, condenser, vacuum, and related balance-of-plant interfaces.
  • Review and accept vendor calculations, specifications, drawings, equipment data, control philosophies, operating transients, and performance guarantees for compliance with project requirements, applicable codes and standards, and plant design basis.
  • Manage mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and control, civil, piping, and plant-system interfaces affecting turbine-generator performance, operability, maintainability, and reliability.
  • Apply power-plant turbine-generator experience to evaluate rotor dynamics, vibration, alignment, thermal expansion, overspeed protection, synchronization, load rejection, generator cooling, and condition-monitoring requirements.
  • Support equipment manufacturing surveillance, constructability reviews, installation, preservation, inspection, and resolution of field changes, non-conformances, and technical queries.
  • Develop and review commissioning plans and test procedures, and provide technical leadership during flushing, rolling, synchronization, loading, overspeed, vibration, and performance testing.
  • Lead troubleshooting and root-cause evaluations for turbine-generator issues, assess equipment health and operational risk, and recommend corrective actions that improve availability and equipment life.
  • Collaborate within the Integrated Project Delivery model and act as the technical liaison among project execution, Owner’s Engineering, suppliers, construction, commissioning, operations, and maintenance teams.
  • Maintain system design, configuration, requirements, equipment, test, and turnover records using project information-management tools and models.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university; a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related discipline is considered an asset.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive engineering experience in power generation, including direct experience with large steam turbine-generators and associated auxiliary systems in nuclear, thermal, or combined-cycle power plants.
  • Must be a fully licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, or be eligible to obtain licensure in Ontario.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of steam turbines, generators, excitation, lubrication and seal-oil systems, gland sealing, condenser and vacuum systems, moisture separation and reheating, and turbine-generator control and protection systems.
  • Experience reviewing vendor calculations, specifications, drawings, operating and control philosophies, performance guarantees, and equipment testing documentation against project requirements and applicable codes and standards.
  • Practical experience with turbine-generator design, installation, alignment, commissioning, synchronization, loading, vibration monitoring, overspeed testing, performance testing, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis.
  • Working knowledge of relevant industry requirements, standards and guidance, including ASME, API, IEEE, CSA.
  • Strong technical leadership, written and verbal communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively across engineering, suppliers, construction, commissioning, operations, and maintenance teams.
  • Ability to work on site and travel as required to supplier facilities.

Important Information

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods.
