Environment, People, and Place shape projects that are sustainable, resilient, and people-focused. We bring environmental intelligence and community-centered deisgn to every stage, creating places that thrive socially, economically, and ecologically.

Senior Environmental Biologist/Ecologist and Project Manager

Hatch’s Environment, People, and Place consulting practice inspires positive change with robust quantitative evidence, deep technical expertise, and unrivaled strategic vision and implementation. Networked across five continents, our team brings together environmental engineers, biologists, scientists, and planners; social performance professionals, economists, and community and Indigenous engagement practitioners; and urban planners, architects, and place-makers to deliver integrated solutions and unprecedented results.

From concept to completion, our range of environmental services includes baseline environmental studies; environmental impact assessments; consultation and engagement; permitting; creation of mitigation plans; construction compliance monitoring; compensation and offsetting plans; and post construction environmental monitoring. Our integrated, multi-disciplinary approach drives smarter, more competitive and inclusive delivery of complex projects that balances economic, environmental, and social performance.

This is an excellent opportunity for a recognized environmental professional to contribute to impactful, responsible, multidisciplinary projects in the metals, infrastructure, and energy sectors. This role demands a forward-thinking leader with industry expertise and consulting experience with a proven ability to deliver projects, mentor teams, and drive business growth.

Role:

We are seeking an experienced Senior Environmental Biologist / Project Manager who will serve as a pivotal leader within our Ontario Environmental, People, and Place team, bridging the gap between rigorous scientific fieldwork, regulatory compliance, and robust project delivery. In this dynamic role, you will be responsible for overseeing environmental baseline programs, permitting strategies, and environmental impact assessments for major energy, infrastructure, and mining developments across Canada, with a primary focus in Ontario.

You will manage the full project lifecycle, serving as the client’s main point of contact, controlling multi-disciplinary project budgets, and managing commercial risks. On the technical and operational side, you will serve as the central coordinator for all environmental field surveys across multiple portfolios of project sites and various clients. Project specific roles may include environmental permitting lead, environmental compliance lead, PLAA lead, and environmental project manager. This includes scheduling, logistics, and health and safety tracking for the field biology teams, coordinating environmental permitting packages as well as providing senior peer review for their biological and ecological baseline reports.

Additionally, you will play a critical role in regional business growth by leading the scoping, strategy, and assembly of competitive technical proposals to secure new project work.

This is an excellent opportunity for a recognized environmental professional to take the next step in their career and help build a top tier environmental services team within an internationally-recognized consulting firm of entrepreneurs with technical souls.

Required Experience

  • Minimum of 10+ years of progressive, post-graduation environmental consulting experience within Canada. Past consulting experience is mandatory
  • Proven track record of managing and delivering environmental services specifically tailored to the mining, heavy infrastructure, transportation, and energy sectors, ideally within Ontario
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating complex environmental field programs and tracking field logistics, safety, and schedules for teams of terrestrial and aquatic biologists
  • Proven experience and commercial acumen to understand contractual conditions that impact execution, effectively monitor project budgets, track earned value, and proactively take actions to mitigate unfavourable trends
  • Experience conducting senior technical reviews of biological baseline reports, environmental impact statements, and natural heritage assessments to ensure scientific integrity and defensibility
  • Deep, practical familiarity with Ontario’s regulatory frameworks and a proven track record of successfully navigating and securing applicable permits, approvals, and authorizations (e.g., under the Environmental Assessment Act, Species Conservation Act, Environmental Protection Act, Fisheries Act; Ontario Water Resources Act and Public Lands Act)
  • Successful experience directly interacting, negotiating, and maintaining professional relationships with provincial and municipal regulatory agencies (e.g., MECP, MNR, Conservation Authorities)
  • Direct experience with federal Environmental Assessment (EA) or Impact Assessment (IA) processes under the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) is strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to lead the development of complex technical and commercial proposals, including scope definition, level-of-effort estimation, and budgeting
  • Experience working alongside, with, or for Indigenous clients, developing long term relationships, and delivery partnerships
  • Demonstrated success in client relationship management and business development
  • Champion Hatch’s mission and values across all project and team initiatives to create positive change

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc. or B.Env.Sc.) in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a closely related discipline. A related Master’s degree (M.Sc.) is an asset
  • A Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is considered a strong asset
  • Exceptional organizational and logistical skills required to manage multiple field teams simultaneously, combined with a strong understanding of Ontario's ecosystems and species at risk
  • Excellent technical writing and communication capabilities
  • Ability to provide mentorship, feedback and support to junior staff
  • Deep knowledge of Ontario and federal environmental and permitting requirements for energy and infrastructure projects
  • Strong commitment to field safety protocols, including familiarity with applicable Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) regulations as they apply to remote and industrial field sites
  • Authoritative and precise technical writing skills for regulatory submissions, alongside excellent verbal communication skills for building trust with clients, regulators, and field staff
  • Consensus-building and cross-discipline team leadership skills
  • Registered Professional Planner (RPP) designation and membership with the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) is preferred. MCIP designation is considered an asset. Other relevant professional certifications or registrations are beneficial
  • MTO Registration and Qualification System (RAQS) certification in Class Environmental Assessment, Natural Sciences, and/or Fisheries Assessment Specialist categories, or the demonstrated experience and training to attain these is considered an asset
