Position Summary
Research Associate Scientist, Research and Innovation
We are looking for a Scientist to support a body of research within the North York General Hospital’s Research and Innovation unit. The successful candidate will play a lead scientific and operational role across multiple research programs of the Knowledge Translation and Implementation Research Program at North York General. These include a multi-phase research program focused on digital health, implementation science, and health equity for high-priority and underserved adult and older adult populations. The successful candidate will be a researcher with a track record of research, scholarship and collaboration. They will need to be independent, resilient, and innovative, with exceptional communication skills and research experience, and will work in close collaboration with the research team, partner organizations, other research networks, patients, caregivers (families or friends), and communities. They will be expected to develop ideas into grant proposals, lead high-quality research projects, write manuscripts, and lead knowledge mobilization campaigns to effectively disseminate research results and outputs into practice and policy. The candidate will also be expected to lead research in advancing the science of implementation and knowledge mobilization. Overall, they will be a critical companion to the team. The incumbent will work with a high degree of independence under the direction of the Research Chair in Knowledge Translation and Implementation at North York General, providing scientific leadership on study design, data analysis, knowledge mobilization, and grant development, while overseeing day‑to‑day research operations and mentoring junior team members and graduate-level trainees.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a highly applied health services and implementation science researcher to make a practical contribution to improving understanding of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), multimorbidity, injury prevention, social frailty, and patient engagement across priority populations, and to advance the science of knowledge mobilization and implementation. The scientist’s role will be to both create new knowledge and mobilize established evidence. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring that health and safety policies are followed to provide a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers, and families.

On a practical level, you will
The key role of the Scientist will be to lead and collaborate on research opportunities within the Knowledge Translation and Implementation (KTI) Program of the Research and Innovation unit at the North York General Hospital, its community and beyond. Core responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
. Conceptualize, design, and lead quantitative, qualitative, and mixed‑methods studies aligned with the KTI research program’s goals (e.g., evidence syntheses, co‑design studies, implementation and evaluation studies; e.g., hybrid implementation‑effectiveness evaluations)
. Lead the development of research protocols, data collection instruments, and analytic plans, including application of implementation science and equity frameworks and methods.
. Oversee and contribute to ethics submissions, amendments, and renewals, ensuring compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
. Lead scoping reviews, systematic reviews, and other evidence syntheses, including protocol development, database searching, screening, data extraction, critical appraisal, and synthesis
. Provide methodological consultation to the team (including trainees) on study design, measurement, mixed‑methods integration, and application of implementation and equity frameworks.
. Provide scientific leadership on the design, testing, and refinement of digital tools and platforms (e.g., portals, decision aids, AI‑enabled features), ensuring alignment with user needs and evidence.
. Oversee usability testing, user research, and analytics review; synthesize insights to inform iterative design and implementation strategies.
. Work closely with developers, UX/service designers, and operational partners to ensure accurate implementation of research requirements and design specifications.
. Lead and oversee advanced data analysis and integration of findings (e.g., thematic analysis, mixed‑methods integration, multivariable or longitudinal analyses), ensuring methodological rigour
. Interpret findings in collaboration with investigators, knowledge users, and community partners, and translate results into recommendations for practice, policy, and digital design decisions.
. Prepare and lead high‑quality manuscripts for peer‑reviewed publication, conference abstracts, policy briefs, and other knowledge mobilization products, often as first or senior author.
. Supervise and mentor trainees and research staff (e.g., RAs, coordinators, Master’s/PhD students, postdoctoral fellows) in day‑to‑day research tasks, analysis, and scholarly development.
. Provide scientific and operational oversight of multi‑site or multi‑phase projects, including timelines, milestones, and deliverables, in collaboration with project managers and coordinators
. Support budget planning related to research activities (e.g., analytic resources, software, participant honoraria) and contribute to monitoring of project expenditures.
. Lead and contribute to the preparation of grant applications (as co‑investigator or collaborator), including methodological sections, analytic plans, and knowledge translation strategies.
. Contribute to the strategic development of the research program, including identification of new lines of inquiry, partnerships, and opportunities for scale‑up and impact.

Qualifications
• PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (e.g., health services research, epidemiology, public health, implementation science, psychology, rehabilitation, or related field)
• Master’s degree in information science, and/or data management or related experience in developing and running search strategies for knowledge syntheses an asset
• Several years of postdoctoral or equivalent research experience in an academic or health research setting, with a strong record of peer‑reviewed publications
• Demonstrated expertise in at least two or more core methodological areas (e.g., qualitative methods, mixed‑methods, implementation science, or health services/clinical epidemiology), plus familiarity with complementary methods
• Experience leading complex research projects and coordinating multi‑stakeholder collaborations (e.g., patients, providers, health system partners, digital teams
• Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in research.
• Proficiency with relevant analytic and data management tools (e.g., NVivo or similar qualitative software; R/Stata/SAS or equivalent; REDCap or similar platforms)
• Experience with digital health, usability testing, co‑design, or human‑centred design approaches is a strong asset
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to translate complex findings for diverse audiences.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and deadlines
