Assistant Professor (Contractually Limited) in Genetics

Position Description:

The Department of Biology at McMaster University invites applications for a three-year contractually limited teaching-focused faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Genetics. The preferred start date for the appointment is August 1, 2025.

Successful candidates will be expected to devote themselves primarily to teaching within an academic environment with a strong research focus, and to follow the developments in the disciplines in which they teach. The appointee will normally teach six (6) courses throughout the academic year (including spring or summer), at the undergraduate level. Depending on the expertise of the successful candidate, these courses could include introductory (1st year) lecture courses in cell biology, genetics and molecular biology; introductory (2nd year) lecture courses in genetics, and 3rd and 4th year courses in plant biology, microbiology, advanced eukaryotic genetics, molecular genetics, and/or microbial genetics. In addition, some courses may include laboratory components (e.g. microbiology; molecular genetics) or tutorial components; the selected candidate would be expected to contribute to laboratory/tutorial content and planning for these courses.

The candidate will be expected to provide student mentorship and administrative service in the Department; administrative service could include participating in curriculum development in the Biology program, contributing to undergraduate recruitment events, or contributing to other service activities. There is no expectation that the candidate will develop an independent laboratory research program, but interest in pedagogical research and supervision of student thesis projects is encouraged.
