Laboratory Analyst – Junior Instrument Operator (LRMS)
Location : ALS Environmental, Burlington
Reports to : Operations Supervisor, LRMS and Inorganics
About the Position
This position is responsible for the analysis, data processing and reporting of data from low‑resolution GCMS systems. On a daily basis, the focus is on routine sample processing, from analysis to reporting, and associated instrument maintenance.
Specific Responsibilities
- Analyze samples for up to two routine methods independently as primary analyst.
- Data processing, assessment and reporting (LIMS and Excel) for up to two routine instrument methods.
- Perform routine maintenance to ensure instrumentation is in good working order.
- Prepare standard solutions for up to two routine analytical standard sets.
- Calibrate analytical instrumentation.
- Complete all required record‑keeping and documentation.
- Maintain spare instrument parts in good working order.
- Evaluate data and troubleshoot problems with data extraction and analysis.
- Interpret data, conduct calculations, and transfer data into electronic data collection software.
- Communicate with team lead, senior analyst(s) and / or direct supervisor regarding workload, as required.
- Aid in the development and implementation of new procedures.
- Cross‑train to acquire the necessary competencies to be an effective backup on those methods where other colleagues are primary analysts.
- Organize workload to meet turn‑around‑times (TATs) and holding times (HTs); prioritize and multitask given that multiple tests are run daily.
- Adhere to strict QA / QC requirements.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Work in accordance with established health and safety policies and procedures, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Organized, highly motivated, detail oriented.Ability to work independently or as part of a team, without supervision.Ability to multitask.Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal.Proficient computer skills, including LIMS, MS Word, and MS Excel.Required Qualifications
2+ years of extensive lab experience, including at least one year processing data.Completion of a technical diploma or B.Sc. degree in chemistry or a related field.Physical Demands
Ability to lift up to 30 lbs and carry for short distances.Manual dexterity to perform intricate and / or repetitive tasks.Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks and gloves when required.Ability to stand or sit for a full shift.Exposure to unpleasant odours may occur.Working at ALS
