About The Denise House

The Denise House is a 33-bed shelter and Community Support Service for women who have experienced gender-based violence, with or without children, located in Oshawa.

We are currently seeking to expand and strengthen our core leadership team with the addition of a Shelter Manager.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Programs and Services and serving as a member of the leadership team, the Shelter Manager oversees all aspects of The Denise House shelter, including daily operations, financial oversight, staff supervision, programming, program development and evaluation, as well as service delivery. The Shelter Manager also plays a key role in community collaboration and advocacy initiatives.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provides leadership and day-to-day supervision to a multidisciplinary team of unionized staff, as well as students and volunteers, delivering counselling, group programming, case management, and daily shelter services to clients.
  • Manages staff scheduling and payroll processes in accordance with the applicable collective agreement, organizational policies, and legislative requirements.
  • Conducts ongoing supervision, coaching, and performance evaluations consistent with collective agreement provisions and organizational practices.
  • Ensures the delivery of high-quality, inclusive, client-centered, strengths-based, trauma-informed, accessible, anti-oppressive, and culturally responsive services that meet client needs, community priorities, and all program targets.
  • Fosters positive labour–management relationships and works collaboratively with staff, union representatives, colleagues, and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Represents the organization and participates in relevant community tables and networks, as appropriate.
  • Ensures effective staff engagement and the efficient use of resources in the delivery of services, in compliance with program guidelines and collective agreement requirements.
  • Manages resources responsibly, uses data to support planning and performance monitoring, and ensures adherence to all relevant policies, procedures, and legislative obligations.
  • Ensures staff compliance with program standards and aligns team operations with The Denise House’s vision, mission, values, and collective agreement obligations.
  • Regularly reviews internal service delivery and external initiatives against best practices and leads continuous quality improvement initiatives across all areas of the team’s work.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in Social Work, Social Services, or a similar discipline
  • 5 to 8 years supervisory experience, preferably in a unionized environment
  • 10+ years of direct service work in gender-based violence, mental health, harm reduction services working with trauma survivors, or a combination of relevant experience.
  • Experience and training in applying anti-racism and anti-oppression approaches, trauma-informed care, 2SLGBTQ+-affirming practice, and harm reduction principles.
  • Strong understanding of the impacts of systemic oppression on women and gender-diverse adults and children, including sexism, racism, poverty, homophobia, transphobia, and disability-related barriers.
  • Ability to identify and interrupt all forms of oppression.
  • Strong experience and understanding of working with marginalized and underrepresented communities, including refugees, newcomers, racialized individuals, vulnerable seniors and caregivers, individuals facing mental health challenges, people with disabilities, and those living in poverty.
  • Ability to apply personal authority thoughtfully, respectfully, and strategically in diverse situations.
  • Proven ability to build positive team culture, morale, and collaboration.
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams through organizational change.
  • Strong collaborative skills with the ability to work strategically alongside staff, volunteers, students, community partners, and funders.
  • A track record of developing and maintaining meaningful community partnerships.
  • Creative and innovative mindset with a willingness to think outside the box.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, planning, and problem-solving abilities
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective organizational skills.
  • Current Vulnerable Sector check
  • WebWISH experience an asset
