Duties

Chief Engineer

Supervises, plans and directs the operation, maintenance and repair of the main propulsion plant, electrical plant, auxiliary machinery, deck machinery, hotel equipment and miscellaneous systems.

Supervises and manages engine room personnel, financial resources and materiel.

Provides technical advice and support to vessel client personnel.

Leads and / or participates in damage control, firefighting, environmental response and other drills, exercises and operations.

Compiles, recommends and manages refit specifications, vessel's configuration change Requests, and other contract repair work required for the upkeep of the vessel.

Manages, directs and participates, if required, in the watch keeping system.

Provides a thorough Change-Over Briefing with the relieving Chief Engineer, including a review of pertinent vessel documents and relevant correspondence.

Provide onboard training, mentorship, and guidance to crew members working toward certification upgrades and developing job-related skills.

Represent the Canadian Coast Guard during contracted refit periods by conducting quality assurance inspections and providing onboard technical expertise.

Provides all support necessary to ensure CCG meets its mandate.

Senior Engineer

Provides technical support to vessel client personnel to assist in the conduct of program operations.

Leads and / or participates in damage control, firefighting, environmental response and other drills, exercises and operations.

Recommends and assists with refit specifications, vessel's additions and alterations, and other contract repair work required for the upkeep of the vessel.

Coordinates and supervises the watch keeping system, and stands assigned watches on a relief basis.

Makes recommendations to the Chief Engineer pertaining to the engine room's material resource needs.

Provide onboard training, mentorship, and guidance to crew members working toward certification upgrades and developing job-related skills.

Represent the Canadian Coast Guard during contracted refit periods by conducting quality assurance inspections and providing onboard technical expertise.

Provides all support necessary to ensure CCG meets its mandate.

Intent of the process

The results of the process will be used to create a pool of qualified candidates and partially qualified candidates that may be used to staff similar positions of various tenures within the Canadian Coast Guard and other government departments.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Occupational Certification

Stream 1 (SO MAO 10) :

Valid Transport Canada STCW Certificate of Competency, 1st Class Engineer Motor Ship

Stream 2 (SO MAO 08 / 09) :

Valid Transport Canada STCW Certificate of Competency, 2nd Class Engineer Motor Ship or higher

Stream 3 (MAO 07) :

Valid Transport Canada STCW Certificate of Competency, 2nd Class Engineer Motor Ship or higher

If you are found fully qualified in stream 2 or 3, you will be considered partially-qualified in the remaining streams until such time you meet the certification and experience requirements to be fully qualified, as long as the statement of merit for the pool is still valid and reflects the duties of the position and needs of the organization.

Experience

Stream 1 (MAO 10) :

Experience as a Senior Engineer on a CCG vessel class D or higher

Or Experience as Chief Engineer on a CCG vessel class C or higher

Or Experience as Chief Engineer or as a Senior Engineer on a vessel with a propulsive power of 2500 kW or higher.

Stream 2 (MAO 08 / MAO 09) :

Experience as a Senior Engineer on a CCG vessel class D or higher

Or Experience as Chief Engineer on a CCG vessel class C or higher

Or Experience as Chief Engineer or as a Senior Engineer on a vessel with a propulsive power of 2000 kW or higher.

Stream 3 (SO MAO 07) :

Experience as Senior Engineer on a CCG vessel, class C or higher

Or Experience as Chief Engineer or as a Senior Engineer on a vessel with a propulsive power of 1500 kW or higher.

Note : Senior Engineer is the Engineer next to the Chief Engineer in the line of authority. Sometimes referred to as the 1st or sometimes the 2nd Engineer.

NOTE :

Experience working ashore as per Coast Guard Operational Order 516.00 applies to applications for MAO 09 and MAO 10 level positions and must be met before an indeterminate appointment.

Experience :

Experience as a Chief Engineer on a Canadian Coast Guard vessel Class D or higher

Experience as a Senior Engineer on a Canadian Coast Vessel Class E or higher

Experience in planning, developing and implementing specifications for vessel modifications, emergency repairs or refit / drydocking

Experience in managing a shipboard disciplinary incident to successful resolution.

Shore Experience (MAO 09 / 10) : this is an asset qualification at time of application, however it is an Essential qualification for an indeterminate appointment at the SO MAO-09 and MAO 10 level.

Note : Candidates shall accumulate at least 4 months experience in a shore position relating to Fleet management or Fleet training OR candidates shall accumulate at least 3 months experience in a shore position relating to Fleet management or Fleet training and Successful completion of G110 - Essentials of Managing in the Public Service course.

Conditions of employment

Secret security clearance

  • Valid Health Canada Medical for seagoing personnel - no limitations
  • Maintain a valid Certificate of Competency
  • For Canadian Citizens, Valid Canadian Passport or for Canadian Permanent Residents, A Valid Passport from a recognized Passport Issuing Authority.
  • Must be willing and able to wear a Respiratory Protection device and meet the standard of the CCG Respiratory Protection Program - RPP
  • Willingness to wear and maintain a uniform per Canadian Coast Guard standards, inclusive of CSA approved safety footwear, and maintain job related personal safety equipment.
  • Must be willing and able to be deployed
  • Must be willing and able to perform overtime work as required, often on short notice
  • Must be willing and able to work shiftwork
  • Must be willing and able to work aboard a vessel for up to 42 consecutive days
  • Must be willing and able to travel by air, land, or by sea

A valid Transport Canada Seafarer\'s medical may be accepted on initial appointment for a period of up to a maximum of 6 months or until a Health Canada Medical is completed.
