Company Profile

Day One Society (Phoenix Centre) provides substance use services and advocacy for individuals, families and communities. We have a 20-bed inpatient detox unit, outpatient youth counselling, youth day treatment and supportive recovery programs.

Job Summary :

This requires flexibility and responsiveness.  Reporting to the Detox Program Supervisor, the Detox Worker 2 (DW) is part of a multidisciplinary team, performing a variety of program related duties in support of clients in inpatient detox services within a harm reduction model. The DW needs to be capable of functioning as a team member, as well as independently. The position involves shift work consisting of 11 hour shifts (Day Shifts and Night shifts).

Key Duties and Responsibilities :

Admission and Assessment of Clients

  • Screens and assesses clients for admission / non admission, entering information in the booking program as required
  • Does admissions and discharges, performing all related tasks
  • Performs 24-hour assessments
  • Takes and records vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse and respiration
  • Documents client information, including discharge summaries, accurately and in a timely fashion
  • Assists in dealing with crisis situations requiring medical management / behavioural management

Client Support and Education

  • Delivers client education as required, including “Take Home Naloxone” education
  • Conducts house meetings for clients
  • Provides recovery planning opportunities for clients supporting their right to self-determination and arranging support by the Inpatient Discharge Coordinator
  • Other

  • Makes beds and does agency laundry
  • Assists with general cleaning of kitchen and client common areas
  • Performs other related duties as required and directed by the Detox Supervisor and / or her designate
  • Qualifications : Education

  • Minimum of 2-year diploma in social or human services from a recognized educational institute or equivalent
  • Training

  • At least 2 years training in the field of mental health and substance use
  • CPR certification
  • Experience

  • At least 2 years’ experience in the field of mental health and substance use
  • At least 2 years’ experience in working with the harm reduction treatment model
  • Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Maintains knowledge of developments in the field of chemical dependency  withdrawal and treatment
