The Position

The Health Care Foundation is seeking an experienced and dynamic General Manager to lead the Health Sciences Centre Gift Shop— an essential space offering comfort and convenience to patients, families, visitors, and hospital staff. This is more than a retail management role; it’s an opportunity to create a meaningful experience in a health care setting while driving sales and operational excellence.

The gift shop provides a thoughtfully curated selection of gifts and everyday essentials, ensuring customers find what they need in moments that matter. We are looking for an experienced leader who can oversee daily operations, manage inventory, and foster a welcoming, customer-focused environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operations and Sales Management : Oversee the day-to-day operations of the gift shop, ensuring excellent customer experience and a well-stocked, visually appealing store.
  • Inventory and Purchasing : Manage product selection, ordering, and vendor relationships to ensure a diverse, high-quality selection of gifts and essentials.
  • Financial Oversight : Monitor sales performance, control expenses, and develop strategies to maximize revenue while maintaining profitability.
  • Team Leadership : Recruit, train, and manage a team of staff and volunteers, fostering a positive and customer-focused work environment.
  • Customer Service : Ensure a warm, welcoming atmosphere where customers feel supported and valued.
  • Compliance and Reporting : Ensure adherence to hospital policies, health and safety regulations, and financial reporting requirements.
  • Community Engagement : Collaborate with hospital departments and fundraising teams to support initiatives that enhance patient and visitor experiences.

Qualifications and Skills

  • 5+ years of retail management experience, preferably in a hospital, specialty shop, or similar environment.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience in staff supervision and training.
  • High degree of initiative, resourcefulness, independence, and collaboration.
  • Proven ability to manage inventory, track sales performance, and control costs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of programs, Point of Sale software, and inventory databases.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with flexibility to adapt to hospital needs.
  • Passion for creating a welcoming and supportive shopping experience for hospital patients, visitors, and staff.
