Position Overview :
We are currently seeking a Controller to join our team in Ottawa. Reporting to the CEO and working closely with senior management, this position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day financial operations and reporting of the Group including internal and external reporting, Treasury, Budget Management, General Accounting, and Payroll. This position will also be responsible for managing a small group of accounting staff.
The successful candidate will have a CPA designation, a demonstrated leader that enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, excellent interpersonal skills, detail oriented, possesses a high degree of analytical skills, and a strong foundation in finance and accounting.
Duties and Responsibilities :
1. General Accounting and Financial Reporting
- Responsible for all G / L transactions for all divisions within the group;
- Prepare monthly bank reconciliations;
- Manage month-end closing process and work with staff to meet pre determined deadlines;
- Work with senior management and support staff to ensure that monthly billings are done in a timely manner;
- Prepare job cost reports and meet with senior management and Project Managers on a monthly basis to review financial performance of projects. Calculate and prepare work in progress (WIP);
- Prepare monthly financial statements and review with senior management;
- Prepare quarterly and yearly financial reports as required by the Company’s banking partners;
- Maintain and update fixed asset register including maintaining depreciation schedule;
- Prepare and file all monthly federal and provincial remittances (GST, HST) for all companies;
- Responsible for all aspects of the day to day operation of the Accounts Payable team;
- Ensure accuracy of coding and adherence to accounts payable policies and procedures;
- Communicate with vendors and reconcile / resolve high priority vendor issues;
- Work closely with Procurement department to resolve issues and ensure adherence to procurement policies;
- Coordinate the year-end inventory count with auditors and internal staff;
- Coordinate the annual audit with external accountants and prepare all relevant working papers and backup;
- Work closely with senior management to prepare annual budget;
- Identify and implement improvements in financial processes and systems to enhance reporting accuracy and efficiency.

Education, Experience and Qualifications :
1. University degree or College Diploma in Accounting from a recognized Canadian Post-Secondary
2. Holds a Chartered Professional Accountant (“CPA”) Designation and is in good standing.
3. Minimum of 3 years of work experience as a Controller or Accounting Manager with supervisory experience;
4. Experience in the Construction or Manufacturing industries are considered an asset.
5. Proficient in Excel and Data Analytics with the ability to create and analyse complex spreadsheets, pivot tables, graphs and charts using financial information.
6. Experience in a leadership position and is able to be a “team player” by creating a positive and pro-active work environment with work colleagues.
7. Excellent communication skills and is able to communicate and articulate requests and responses to both internal and external parties in a timely fashion.
8. Can work in a dynamic, complex, fast-paced environment, adapt quickly to manage changing priorities and deadlines.
9. Strategic thinker that can think outside the box, focused on efficiency and improving existing processes.
10. Self-motivated and pro-active, with respect to both managing workload and professional development.
11. The ability to work independently and within a group to meet tight reporting deadlines;
12. Bilingual would be an asset;
