The Academic Advising & Career Centre (AA&CC) embraces a holistic philosophy in its delivery of integrated academic advising, learning skills, career development and employment coaching services to students. Your opportunity :

Become part of the Career Exploration and Employment Development (CEED) team, who operates as a collaborative hub of expertise to support and engage our diverse population of students and new graduates in their exploration of career, employment and further education options.

As Career Counsellor, you will report into the Career Supports, Team Lead, and will assist students and recent graduates work through a range of career development and employment strategies. This includes educating students on the career development process; acquainting students with relevant and current information about careers and the labour market; facilitating their development of career, education and employment goals and teaching career research skills and strategies. While serving all students, you will have a specific focus on supporting persons with disabilities navigate barriers they face when seeking employment.

You will also be accountable for assessing student feedback, as well as researching and analyzing statistical reports in order to provide input towards aligning outcome-oriented career education and experiential learning programming with department strategic goals.

Your responsibilities will include :

  • Counselling students and new graduates on career-related matters by discussing options and consequences while incorporating personal circumstances and an understanding of an individual's background.
  • Applying self-assessment exercises, vocational assessments, non-directive and other career counselling techniques.
  • Advising and coaching students on work search strategies / skills and career-related services and resources.
  • Screening for referrals and arranging appointments with other counselling services for students in distress.
  • Analyzing complex statistical reports and information for important decision-making.
  • Conducting labour market research and analysis to support academic programming alignment decisions.
  • Conducting a detailed analysis of student feedback and learning outcomes to inform program planning activities.
  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars tailored, as well as promoting programs and services for students.

Essential Qualifications :

  • University Degree in a counselling discipline, or related field (e.g. behavioural sciences, adult education), or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree (e.g. counselling psychology, psychotherapy, social work) is preferred.
  • Must have training in a variety of personal counselling theories and interventions; in psycho-educational assessment, career development and counselling models, human development, learning and decision-making theories.
  • Minimum one year of related experience in career counselling and employment coaching, preferably in a fast-paced post-secondary educational setting.
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities in an employment context.
  • Must have exceptional facilitation experience in order to effectively deliver presentations and workshops.
  • Must have sound knowledge of the principles of counselling with demonstrated ability that leads to change, personal development and successful navigation within the labour market, occupational paths and selection processes for higher education and employment in the context of student success.
  • Be knowledgeable in the application of standards for the ethical and legal practice of career counselling.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the ability to research, learn and utilize theoretical approaches and best-practices for career counselling and employment coaching.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint), student information systems, and client management and appointment booking database systems.
  • Must have strong interpersonal, counselling and written and verbal skills, in order to communicate effectively with a diverse student population.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills, accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team, in order to foster an environment of trust, respect and collaboration.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and credibility with students, faculty, staff and senior administrators.
  • Ability to work well and remain calm under pressure.
  • Assets (Nonessential) :

  • Knowledge of crisis intervention theories and methods and the ability to safely and effectively refer and transition clients in crisis to appropriate support services.
  • Knowledge of mental health issues with the ability to identify bio-psychosocial barriers to participate in the career counselling process.
  • Preference will be given to those qualified to administer and interpret MBTI, Strong Interest Inventory and other B level instruments.
