Scope

The City of Surrey is seeking a passionate, creative, and collaborative Media Specialist to join the Community Arts team at Clayton Community Centre. This role is dedicated to developing and delivering the Weekly Surrey Youth Media Program, a dynamic initiative that empowers youth to explore and express themselves through digital media arts.

As the Youth Media Program Assistant, you will lead and plan engaging weekly sessions that introduce young participants to a range of media arts practices, including video production, podcasting, photography, digital storytelling, and social media content creation. You will foster a welcoming and inclusive environment where youth can build creative confidence, develop technical skills, and share their voices through multimedia platforms. In addition to leading the media program, you will also support open studio youth-specific music programming in the Performing Arts Studio, helping to create a flexible and inspiring space for exploration, collaboration, and creative growth.

The candidate will be familiar with performing arts programs and events and have experience working with artists and the community. Reporting to the Performing Arts Programmer, the Performing Arts Program Assistant is a key member of the team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone pursuing a career in Arts, Culture or Heritage. This position works Friday to Saturday evenings.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, schedules, implements, delivers, promotes, evaluates and provides feedback on a wide range of programs and services, including but not limited to special events, workshops, educational courses, bus trips and entertainment.
  • Supervises Instructors, volunteers, clerical and junior staff.
  • Mentor youth in media production techniques including filming, editing, sound design, and content publishing.
  • Utilize and maintain recording studio equipment and software, ensuring safe and effective use by youth participants.
  • Maintain and organize media equipment, software, and studio spaces to ensure accessibility and functionality.
  • Performs other job related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 and some post-secondary education from a recognized institution, supplemented by 2 years related experience including supervision in cultural work or area of specialty or an equivalent acceptable combination of training and experience.
  • Fundamental knowledge of musical instruments such as guitar, piano, or ukulele is an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License with a safe driving history.
  • Emergency First Aid Certificate and CPR C Certificate.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Work experience within a cultural organization is an asset).
  • Hands-on experience with recording studio practices, including audio engineering, mixing, and equipment setup is an asset.
  • An understanding of Performing Arts Programming in a Community Centre setting is an asset.

    Pay Grade : Schedule D

    Hourly Rate : $26.29

    Conditions of Employment

    This position requires completion of a Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.
