Edmonton or Calgary, Alberta The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Summer Student to join the Regulatory Applications (RA) Branch. In this role, you will work with the Environmental Sciences Applications Team to assess environmental impacts and provide science-based, risk-informed recommendations on energy project applications. You will gain hands-on experience in air quality, water quality, wetlands, hydrology, fisheries, and wildlife biology while contributing to projects such as coal mining, oil sands, conventional oil and gas, and pipelines. Opportunities may also arise to work with the Enterprise Reclamation Team on reclamation audits. This role supports environmental management under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA), Public Lands Act, and Water Act, offering practical experience in science, legislation, policy, and stakeholder engagement, while developing data and evidence-based recommendations. Experience with environmental data analysis and GIS mapping is an asset. Familiarity with environmental impacts of mining and oil and gas projects is an asset. Strong analytical, organizational, and data management skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an emphasis on technical writing. This role may involve limited travel (~10%) to industrial sites in various weather conditions (rain, snow), including areas near water bodies and along riverbanks. Applicants must be able to walk on-site, travel long distances by vehicle, and wear personal protective equipment (PPE).Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and / or reclassified.
