Job Summary

Working with the research team, the Research Assistant (RA) will perform a variety of research activities in a research environment focused on human papillomavirus (HPV) related diseases and cervical cancer prevention. Duties include preparation and analysis of data, assisting with preparation of a variety of research and project documents and procedures, grant writing, presentations and perform literature reviews.
The RA will work under the supervision of the Program Manager and Principal Investigator and will work with other members of the HPV Related Diseases Research Team.

Organizational Status

This position is located at the Women's Health Research Institute at BC Women's Hospital and will work under the supervision of Dr. Gina Ogilvie, PI and professor at the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) and the Program Manager of the Ogilvie Lab.
Housed within the Faculty of Medicine, SPPH is an innovative unit that encompasses many of the health-related groupings at UBC as a collaborative venture. The School is structured around four divisions: Occupational and Environmental Health; Health Services and Policy; Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health Practice; and Health in Populations. The resulting mix of professions and disciplines is seen as a means of connecting individuals and learners to galvanize the relationship between health research, public health and health services and to enhance learning.

Work Performed

  • Assists with creation and writing of various study documents and management of documents through the UBC REB process and through the standardized procedures established within the research program
  • Prepare and organize various documents for grant submissions and contributes as needed to grant application processes
  • Maintains and participates in the creation of research related records and databases and documents, including SOPs, flow diagrams, study teaching documents etc
  • Conduct literature reviews, and contribute to presentation preparations
  • Maintains and participates in the creation of research related documents (standard operating procedures, instructional material etc and databases)
  • Identifies and consents potential study participants, and tracks their progress and compliance through the study protocol
  • Data analysis, interpretation and management with competence and knowledge of study protocols including ability to troubleshoot problems as needed
  • Liaises with internal and external study stakeholders as required (inter agency, partnering project team members locally or globally, etc)
  • Performs literature research and generates a variety of reports
  • Performs basic statistical analyses according to established protocols
  • Notifies research manager or PI of actual or potential issues related to the various studies and assists with development of reconciliation processes as needed
  • Assists with coordination of trainee and student placements in the Global Control HPV Related Disease Research Program
  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The research assistant will be supervised by the Research Program manager and the Principal Investigator. The RA will refer to the program manager for issues or queries for guidance.

Works under general supervision; receives detailed instructions on the assignment of new duties and thereafter only on new or unusual problems.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate or master's degree in the health or social sciences, preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in clinical trials, public health and women’s health an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Interpersonal, organizational skills and attention to detail are mandatory.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to travel as needed to partner study sites in the lower mainland.
  • Working knowledge of computer applications for word processing and spreadsheets, as well as Internet browsers and email applications.
  • Must have a strong work ethic.
