SUMMARY

This unique role is a nursing role in Ambulatory Services, where a registered practical nurse provides relevant nursing care to clients in the Spiral Garden.

The Spiral Garden is an integrated outdoor art, music, play and garden program for children and youth with physical disabilities and developmental delays and those who are typically developing.

It offers a rich opportunity to explore, create and play in a safe and nurturing group setting.

There is one RPN working within the camp. This position is available to internal candidates. Successful candidates must be flexible to participate in training and meetings starting the last week of June and be able to attend the program daily through the summer.

It is a full-time position from the end of June through the end of August with one week off during the summer.

Please note that if you are on a temporary contract or if you are a permanent employee, you must receive approval from your manager to apply to take on this additional FTE.

Holland Bloorview is an academic hospital, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. All clinical staff are expected to contribute to the academic agenda through one or more of the following activities : supervising students, teaching, academic service, scholarship and research.

All non-clinical staff are encouraged, when appropriate.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Practice

  • Use evidence based practice to plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for clients within a day camp environment.
  • Provides nursing care utilizing a strengths based approach that promotes and supports the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual well-being of clients and families
  • Practices culturally competent care
  • Partners with clients / families and other team members to ensure the goals of the client are reached
  • Continuously assesses the outcome of care provided and assesses and manages first aid and emergency situations
  • Administration of medications and treatments, e.g., g-tube feeds as appropriate
  • Collaborate with Care Team and Program Coordinator to facilitate safe care within the garden environment
  • Advocates for clients / families with goal of effective outcomes and appropriate use of resources
  • Supports and respects the client / family's rights to make decisions based on their own values, beliefs and experiences

Collaboration

  • Collaborates with client / family and interprofessional team to identify client-centred goals
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills
  • Practices based on identified standards of care within an interprofessional environment
  • Provides health teaching to individual and groups of clients, i.e. sexual health, managing my medical needs, self-advocacy

Leadership

  • Uses strength based leadership to develop themselves and engage others, build partnerships and networks to achieve results, and use systems / critical thinking to champion and orchestrate change.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities to ensure the delivery of efficient and effective health care
  • Participates in quality activities to ensure the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment
  • Utilizes the teaching / learning process to provide education, both formal and informal to clients / families, colleagues, students and other professionals within a fully affiliated academic healthcare environment
  • Manages change in a constructive and appropriate manner

Research / Education

  • Demonstrates a spirit of inquiry by examining current practice and identifying questions for study
  • Utilizes nursing best practice guidelines to deliver care
  • Participates in nursing research where applicable and utilizes outcome measurements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Registered Practical Nurse from an accredited college.
  • Current license with College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current BCLS certificate-Basic Rescuer
  • Previous job-related experience, preferably in a pediatric or rehabilitation setting
  • Demonstrated clinical skills in caring for children with complex care needs
  • Experience in behaviour management preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse workload while setting priorities and meeting deadlines
  • Demonstrated computer skills, Meditech experience preferred
  • Must have proven experience working with children and youth
  • Comfortable working within outdoor / indoor camp environment
