The Lax Kw’alaams Band has an immediate opening for a full-time permanent Forestry Technician. As the Forestry Technician, you shall perform such duties and responsibilities pertaining to the support of the Lax Kw’alaams Band, as determined and delegated to you by management, which duties and responsibilities shall include, without limiting the generality of the foregoing :

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

Advocacy and representation, collaboration and engagement, culture and heritage stewardship, landscape planning, block layout and site plan development, forestry referral response, education, research, and program development to uphold, protect and celebrate Lax Kw’alaams Rights and Title held over its lands and waters.

The Forestry Technician is responsible for leading forestry planning and consultation to reduce adverse industrial and anthropologic impacts on Lax Kw’alaams Rights and Title prioritizing early engagement and collaboration. At the consultation stage, forestry referrals will be processed as per data management policies and practises and checked for completeness prior to the implementation of Lax Kw’alaams referral assessment that incorporates three inimitable processes (technical, cultural and heritage, Guardian). Each assessment contributes to the consultation record and together formulate a means to evaluate and determine potential immediate and future impacts on Lax Kw’alaams Rights and Title. Through the use of referral tools and process review, the Forestry Technician provides professionally informed, culturally based, permit referral responses to regulators and proponents.

All staff are expected to be team-oriented and maintain absolute confidentiality for all organizational information. This is a one-year term position comprising of office and field work in Lax Kw’alaams.

Duties and Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to :

  • Develop and implement pre-engagement process with forestry companies operating within Lax Kw’alaams territory for forestry site plans and block lay out.
  • Initiate consultation referral submission adequacy review for forestry referrals while maintaining and growing regulator, proponent and third-party consultant relations.
  • Manage multiple forestry referral files while maintaining response timelines and providing professional quality written materials and work products.
  • Analyse technical reports to identify potential issues and make recommendations to the project to reduce adverse impacts.
  • Coordinate with department staff to ensure the accurate and timely preparation, facilitation and response of consultations and permit letters for forestry referral applications received.
  • Consistent maintenance and organization of forestry referral, consultation and permit documents to maintain records / documents to preserving knowledge.
  • Working with Cultural Heritage Coordinator and other Lands, Resources and Stewardship staff, identify and implement Traditional Use Knowledge Studies to support area-based forestry reviews.
  • Participate in meetings, conduct field site visits, and interact with technical representatives of proponents and regulators.
  • Inclusion of Guardians in field work, data collection, reporting, and monitoring.
  • Data entry of past forestry consultation and referral records into the Connect Portal and other databases.
  • Development of internal policy related to forestry consultation and permitting as needed.
  • Draft reports, letters, monthly community newsletter forestry updates, and other written responses as directed.
  • Draft briefing notes and provide recommendations to Executive Director on issues relating to forestry operations and land use planning but not limited to.
  • Provide guidance, advice and support on forestry legislation regulations, policy and practices.
  • Provide interdepartmental support as required from time to time as directed by management.
  • Maintains confidentiality as per policy guidelines.
  • Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position as assigned.

Qualifications

Education :

  • Diploma or degree, or equivalent experience, in forestry resource management, or related renewable resource program.
  • Experience :

  • Minimum two years of field experience as a Forestry Technician or one year as a Registered Professional Forester or in a related field.
  • Sound knowledge of forest management practices
  • Working knowledge of stewardship, ecosystem restoration, agricultural soil, and water conservation practices
  • Familiarity with flora and fauna species identification
  • Ability to undertake field work under varying terrain and weather conditions
  • Experience and knowledge in the use and application of GIS and GPS systems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including a strong ability in report writing, including excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as be a cooperative and contributing member in a team environment.
  • Self-motivation with the capability to balance competing priorities and manage ambiguous situations

  • Valid Driver’s License (Class 5) is required.
  • Classification / Pay Scale

  • Unionized staff position, Benefits and Pension Plan.
  • $25 – $40 / hour dependent on experience and level of education
