Reporting to the Deputy Warden, Programs at the Rankin Inlet Healing Facility, the incumbent will function as an Substance Abuse Program / Spousal Assault Anger Management Facilitator for the offenders based on traditional Inuit culture as well as provide one on one counseling or in groups of 4-7.

Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ), the guiding principle for the Government of Nunavut is the foundation for this position. The primary goal of Nunavut Corrections is to provide culturally relevant programs in a holistic manner, that will assist offenders to lead socially and productive lives within and outside correctional facilities.

It is equally important that the correctional facilities managed by this division provide culturally relevant and viable program of reintegration for offenders.

The Program / Counselor Facilitator’s primary responsibilities include developing, managing, maintaining and facilitating the Inuit culture based programs within the established guidelines in order to provide opportunities for rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders in low and medium security sections.

Thorough knowledge of traditional Inuit justice systems and / or practices, program facilitation, counselling, substance abuse and spousal assault programming along with excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills will be essential in this position.

The qualifications required to be invited for an interview include a degree in counselling or related field, plus 2-4 years of experience in community development / counselling / facilitating programs;

strong background in the cultural beliefs and lifestyles of Inuit; positive role model at the community level; experience in identifying resources in the community for traditional purposes and aftercare planning.

This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut.

Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.
