Essential Duties / Responsibilities

  • Manage the preparation and submission of regulatory agency applications, reports, or correspondence based on the strategic direction set by the regulated business leadership.
  • Intervene in proceedings in multiple provinces, based on the business needs of NRG.
  • Provide regulatory oversight on all regulatory agency submission materials to ensure timeliness, accuracy, comprehensiveness, or compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Manage activities such as interventions in proceedings, audits or regulatory agency inspections.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including customer operations, finance and the commercial teams in the submission of regulatory documents.
  • Understand business needs and the regulatory implications of proposed changes, whether originating from NRG or government agencies.
  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant regulations, including proposed and final rules.
  • Communicate regulatory changes, progress of proceedings across Canada and provide regulatory expertise to DE Canada Home, DE Canada Business, XOOM Canada and corporate groups.
  • Act as an alternative contact for utility commissions, utilities, independent system operators, market surveillance agencies and energy retailers across multiple provinces in Canada.
  • Manage legal budgets and relationships with various law firms across Canada.
  • Manage engagement contracts and budgets for experts as required in support of regulatory proceedings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions :

  • Open office environment.
  • Some overtime required to meet regulatory deadlines.
  • Minimal travel.
  • Willingness and ability to work from home, with appropriate work conditions at home.

Minimum Requirements :

  • Ten years of regulatory experience.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations and rules.
  • University degree.
  • Excellent writing skills, verbal communication and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Demonstrated competency with developing regulatory applications or participating in regulatory proceedings in Canada.
  • Demonstrated excellent writing skills, particularly associated with regulatory communications. (applications, supporting evidence, interrogatories, correspondence, argument)
  • Strong knowledge of procedural steps and rules associated with regulatory proceedings.
  • Understanding business needs and how to meet the regulation with consideration of those needs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the energy market and retail structures across Canada.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Previous experience with relationship building across utilities, commissions, interveners.
  • Previous experience with the e-filing system that is utilized by the Alberta Utilities Commission is an asset.
  • Experience in managing multiple deadlines.
