The Role
FREDsense is seeking a Staff Accountant to join the team in our Calgary office and establish a foundation of systems and processes that will scale with the company’s global expansion. A priority of the position will be to bring finance and accounting functions in‑house from current external service providers. Reporting to the President, the ideal candidate comes with 5+ years of accounting experience in a startup, scale‑up, or venture‑backed technology company combined with the ability to be the sole accounting professional for the company, owning the full spectrum of responsibilities in a hands‑on capacity. Being comfortable executing both routine and complex tasks will be crucial while also bringing the ambition and capability to scale the function as the business grows.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting
- Manage relationship with external accounting / tax provider, working to transition accounting duties in‐house over time to reduce external expense
- Treasury / cash management, including transfers from USD to CAD accounts
- Monthly bank account reconciliations
- Review all transactions and ensure proper coding to budget categories
- Manage employee expense reimbursements
- Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements
- Assist with completion of annual financial statement audit process
- Produce any required special investor reporting
- Participate in annual strategic planning and budgeting process
Tax and other special reporting
Responsibility for overseeing completion of tax returns and SR&ED claims, managing external providersGrant reporting and other special reporting (including but not limited to IRAP, MICA, NPC, etc.)Human Resources and Administrative
Administer payroll (via external processor WagePoint)Provide assistance with onboarding new employeesAddress benefits enrollment and administration questionsManage Company insurance programs with insurance brokerQualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Commerce; CPA designation (CA, CMA, CGA) preferredMinimum 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in a startup, scale‑up, or venture‑backed technology companyStrong understanding of ASPE and comfort preparing statements for audited environmentsExperience with Xero or other cloud‑based accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks Online, NetSuite, Sage)Proficiency with grant and cost‑accounting, multi‑currency transactions, and cross‑border reportingDemonstrated ability to establish new processes, automate reporting, and manage multiple external relationshipsExcellent organizational and analytical skills with a hands‑on, proactive approachCollaborative mindset with the ability to work closely with non‑finance stakeholdersFamiliarity with FP&A, cash forecasting, and startup KPI reporting considered an assetSeniority level
