Overview

Job ID #31224 : Fitness Instructor II at City Of Hamilton. This position reports to the Recreation or Aquatic Supervisor within one or more Recreation Centres and is responsible for leading participants in group fitness instruction both on land and in water. The instructor provided is expected to deliver a safe, informative, progressive and effective fitness experience in line with certification governing bodies.

Typical activities include offerings such as Boot Camp, Cardio Step, Cardio Kickfit, Stroller Fit, Nordic Poling, Cardio Dance, Water Fit and Warm Water Exercise.

Responsibilities

• Maintain qualifications and certifications within current acceptable standards in the chosen discipline.
• Lead and / or instruct groups and individuals in fitness within current accepted standards for the recreation discipline.
• Deliver instruction of skills for various programs within their capabilities and experience.
• Prepare course outlines and lesson plans according to curriculum guidelines.
• Provide information related to lifestyle awareness as it relates to the recreation instructional program.
• Attend to clients’ special needs related to the recreation program being instructed.
• Monitor fitness equipment, facilities and activities to ensure safety and provide emergency or first aid assistance when required, including preparation of incident / accident reports when required.
• Attend mandatory staff meetings and training sessions.
• Maintain accurate administrative records such as attendance forms and class lists for the program as identified by full-time staff.
• Respond to questions and general inquiries from the public and program participants.
• Monitor the performance levels of participants during program activity.
• Manage setup and teardown of all program equipment.
• Work independently without direct supervision.
• In the absence of Recreation staff, respond to minor emergencies within the building to ensure safety of all patrons and staff.
• Work in accordance with Health and Safety legislation and City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies related to Occupational Health and Safety.
• Perform other duties as assigned related to the responsibilities of this position.

Qualifications

Hours : Hours are varied depending on location and program requirements (0-24 hours per week).

Notes : As a condition of employment, the successful applicant(s) will be required to obtain a Criminal Reference Check (Vulnerable Sector Screening) at their own expense prior to beginning work in this position. Successful candidates will be required to enter into an employment agreement. Current certification / qualification must be provided at the time of interview.
