Job Description Summary

UBC Sauder School of Business is a leading global business faculty. The school is consistently ranked among the top 100 worldwide and is recognized for excellence in research, learning, faculty, and partnerships. A collaborative culture supports our educational mission.

UBC Sauder’s Hari B. Varshney Business Career Centre supports students’ personal and professional development toward responsible leadership through services focused on self-exploration, career development and access to business communities.

The Manager, Business Development is an external-facing position responsible for creating and fostering a network of employers, industry professionals and UBC Sauder alumni in local, national and international business communities with interest and expertise in all business functions. The role collaborates with this network and multiple divisions of the business school to create career development and work experience opportunities for undergraduate and master level students. The role may support other UBC Sauder-led industry initiatives that support community building and knowledge sharing. The Manager deepens and shares knowledge about business careers in allocated industry sectors and shares industry connections with the team, career managers and students. Though predominately focused on employer relations, the work can include program management and some student-facing activities.

The Manager, Business Development will achieve results in three key areas of responsibility that align with the BCC’s strategy and critical success factors : Personal and professional development , Access to business communities , Service excellence .

This role will require travel to key markets outside of BC (e.g., Toronto, Calgary, New York).

Organizational Status

Reports to the Associate Director, Business Development.

This is an external-facing position engaging with local, national and international employers and industry association representatives ranging from senior level executives to hiring managers and HR personnel. Field-based sales is a critical component in local, national and international markets.

Within the Business Career Centre, works closely with other Business Development Managers and collaborates with Business Career Centre staff, including the Assistant Dean, Associate Directors and Career Strategists, Program Managers, etc. Within UBC Sauder, interacts with faculty as well as the Business Development teams of multiple divisions including : Recruitment & Admissions of the Robert H. Lee Graduate School, the Development and Alumni Engagement office and Executive Education. Within UBC, interacts with UBC’s Centre for Student Involvement & Careers and other faculty Co-op teams.

Work Performed

  • Personal and professional development : Identifies and creates co-op, internship and new graduate opportunities for students and corporate partners for in-class and capstone projects.
  • Conducts market analyses within industry sectors : identifies hiring trends for interns and new graduates, skills requirements and future career opportunities.
  • Funnels employer feedback on competitive skills requirements to program designers to influence curriculum and competitiveness of graduates.
  • Builds knowledge of careers in allocated industry sectors within the team and for students.
  • Participates in the development of career resources.
  • Access to business communities : Enables opportunities to connect employers and students for career exploration, networking and hiring.
  • Creates networking and recruiting connections for students through 1-1 introductions, employer-led events, company visits / tours, and online forums.
  • Presents industry feedback to colleagues and faculty on programming and initiatives to build the student talent pipeline.
  • Develops and executes annual business plans to drive employer recruitment growth as measured by KPIs for all student programs (MBA, BCom, BCom Co-op, MM, MM Dual, MBAN).
  • Develops and executes key employer account plans with ongoing relationships across multiple business units via needs assessments and campus recruitment integration.
  • Maintains ongoing visible presence in the local market through in-person sales calls and field campaigns.
  • Travels to key markets outside BC (e.g., Toronto, Calgary, Seattle, New York) for in-person client meetings and visiting groups of students.
  • Lead generation activities including cold calling, presentations, emails, networking events, trade shows, career fairs and conferences.
  • Service Excellence : Maintains current industry and recruiting trend expertise by consulting publications, researching, networking and attending conferences.
  • Identifies and facilitates employer introductions to support relationship building and revenue opportunities for other Sauder divisions.
  • Maintains up-to-date employer and employment outcome records in the CRM.
  • Tracks and reports on annual expenditures.
  • Contributes to marketing materials, lead generation campaigns, sales process improvements and systems implementation as required.
  • Supervises students or administrative staff as required in employer marketing, reporting and special projects.
  • Participates in strategic planning and program / project assessments and evaluation.
  • Performs other duties within the role’s guidelines as required.

Consequence of Error / Judgement

Manager represents UBC Sauder School of Business, the students and the University. Incorrect decisions / judgement can affect the School’s reputation with employers and future alumni, impact student employment, program operations and the University’s reputation.

Supervision

Supervision Received Works independently under general guidance from the Associate Director, Business Development and participates in setting annual objectives and quarterly goals with the team.

Supervision Given Delegates and reviews work of the Business Development Associate, student employees and volunteers; hires and manages contract work with outside suppliers.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of six years related experience in a suitable business area, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA is preferred.
  • Experience in a sales / business development or relationship management role.
  • Experience and comfort with cold calling are assets.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills – written and verbal.
  • Computer skills : MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook. Salesforce experience is an asset.
  • Effective organizational, supervisory and presentation skills.
  • Availability for evening events during Fall and Winter recruiting cycles.
  • Valid BC driver’s license and regular access to a vehicle.
