Why Meridian?

At Meridian our aspiration is to integrate our purpose into everything we do for people, the planet, and communities. We believe that our greatest opportunity is to create opportunity and meet people where they are.

Factor us into your next career opportunity. We want you to grow with us and have an experience that’s different. This is a place where you can expect the unexpected.

Find our story here:

The role:

The Release Engineer is the senior practitioner and standards-setter for Meridian’s Release Engineering function. The role owns build and code management in practice — branching strategy, artifact and package versioning, build reproducibility, and code custody standards — and operates development and QA environments to pre-production standard as instances of Platform Engineering’s template library. Working within the version-lifecycle and promotion criteria set by Release & Service Governance, the Release Engineer directs the day-to-day work of contingent release engineers, converts ticket-based environment support into self-service, and applies sound independent judgment on build and environment problems that do not follow an established pattern.

Key Responsibilities:

Build & Code Management

  • Own and operate Meridian’s branching and merge strategy across the delivery estate; govern repository structure, protection rules, and code custody standards
  • Engineer reproducible builds: artifact and package versioning (Azure Artifacts, NuGet, npm), software dependency management, and secure build configuration
  • Maintain the build knowledge base and runbooks to audit-ready standard

Environment Operations — Dev & QA

  • Implement and operate Dev and QA environments following CI/CD standard
  • Meet environment parity and promotion criteria by construction; remediate drift findings before they reach the readiness gate
  • Convert recurring environment requests into self-service; measure and report the manual effort retired each quarter

Release Pipeline Support

  • Maintain release-build pipelines for assigned estates within the shared pipeline templates; support release execution to Release & Service Governance’s gates
  • Provide build and environment support during critical release windows as scheduled

Continuous Improvement & Standards

  • Lead improvement initiatives across build and environment practice; pilot tooling with Platform Engineering and produce structured findings for the Sr. Manager
  • Maintain the function’s standards — branching, versioning, environment usage — and keep them current as the estate modernizes
  • Track adoption and propose retirement of legacy build tooling in line with published timelines

Team & Vendor Coordination

  • Coordinate with Platform & Engineering Services (SRE) for dependencies touching pre-production, and with vendors for tooling support
  • Serve as the escalation point for build and environment issues in Dev and QA

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Expert, hands-on knowledge of Git branching strategies (trunk-based and GitFlow), Azure DevOps Pipelines and Artifacts, and GitHub Actions
  • Strong build-engineering capability: package management (NuGet, npm), software dependency management, code scanning (SAST, secrets, licence), build caching, and build reproducibility
  • Proficient scripting in PowerShell and Python for build automation, environment management, and test-data operations
  • Working knowledge of C#/.NET application development sufficient to configure build pipelines, review pipeline definitions, and troubleshoot build issues across the delivery estate

Problem Solving

  • Confronts novel build and environment problems where no established pattern exists; independently constructs resolution approaches and documents them as standards for contingent engineers to follow
  • Sets build and environment standards within the Sr. Manager’s functional direction; exercises independent judgment on daily operations, contingent-engineer direction, and standard-setting decisions
  • Escalates to the Sr. Manager for decisions involving tooling investment, changes to platform boundaries with Platform Engineering, or significant departures from Release & Service Governance policy

Accountability

  • Directly accountable for build integrity, Dev/QA environment availability and parity, and the quality of contingent release-engineer output across the delivery estate
  • Standards and procedures set by this role govern how all development teams manage code, builds, and environments; inconsistency or poor design at this level propagates across the full estate
  • Accountable for the onboarding, task quality, and knowledge capture of contingent release engineers; makes each seat’s knowledge transferable and each decision documented

Working Style

  • Communicates build and environment standards clearly to engineers and reports progress and improvement metrics to the Sr. Manager in plain terms
  • Collaborative with peer functions — Platform Engineering, Release Governance, and SRE — earns influence through technical credibility and well-documented evidence rather than positional authority
  • Self-motivated and reliable; manages own workload across standards-setting, environment operations, and improvement work without requiring close supervision

Education, Designations, Training, and Experience

  • Computer Science degree or acceptable equivalent qualifications
  • Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in release engineering, build engineering, or DevOps, including environment management in a multi-stage delivery estate
  • Demonstrated production ownership of CI/CD pipelines, artifact management, and branching strategy at team or organizational scale
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating delivery across multiple teams and driving complex technical improvements to completion within a governed release environment
  • Experience operating non-production environments (provisioning, refresh, test data) in a regulated environment
  • Proficient scripting in PowerShell and Python; experience with build automation and environment management scripting
  • Working knowledge of application development (C#, .NET) sufficient to support build configuration and pipeline troubleshooting
  • Working knowledge of ITIL principles; ITIL Foundation is an asset
  • Relevant certifications are assets: AZ-400 (DevOps Engineer Expert), GitHub Actions, HashiCorp Terraform Associate
