Job description

Position details: Full time contract (12 months)

Position title: Development Assistant

Taking care of our environment has never been more important than it is today. The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is looking for a Development Assistant to join a team committed to protecting our most important natural areas and the plants and animals they sustain.

NCC is the nation’s leading not-for-profit, private land conservation organization, working to protect our most important natural areas and the species they sustain. Since 1962, we have brought people together to conserve and restore more than 20 million hectares across Canada. NCC takes a collaborative, evidence-based approach to achieve conservation success for the sake of nature and Canadians. With office locations in all ten provinces across Canada, NCC delivers results you can walk on.

NCC recognizes that we work on lands that have long been cared for by Indigenous Peoples under their own laws and knowledge systems. We are committed to transforming how we do our work, advancing Reconciliation through conservation, and working with Indigenous Peoples in meaningful, respectful, and supportive ways.

Position Summary

The Nature Conservancy of Canada is seeking an individual to join British Columbia’s Development and Communications team in the role of Development Assistant. The Development and Communications team is a collaborative regional team that raises funds for conservation projects and priorities across BC and helps share NCC’s work and achievements with a range of audiences through a variety of storytelling tools.

The Development Assistant will support the team through meeting and event coordination, data management and other administrative duties as assigned. This role is well suited to someone proactive who enjoys keeping work organized, tracking details through to completion, and takes ownership of keeping a busy team responsive and prepared. This position reports to the Director of Development Operations.

This is a 12-month contract position with the opportunity to work both remotely and from our Vancouver office, where in-person presence is required a few days each week.

The Development and Communications team takes a donor-centred, relationship-based approach to fundraising. We focus on stewardship, trust, and meaningful engagement, helping donors see the impact of their giving and feel connected to conservation.

Our team values:

  • Thoughtful stewardship and clear, customized donor communications;
  • Strong relationships built through trust, curiosity, and careful listening;
  • Collaboration across fundraising, communications, conservation, and senior leadership to create compelling donor experiences;
  • Strategic use of time and resources, with a focus on activities that deepen engagement and support conservation impact.

  • Maintain and update event planning procedures, vendor lists and templates.
  • Schedule internal meetings, prepare agendas, help meetings stay on track, take notes, confirm decisions and action items, and follow up to ensure next steps are completed.
  • Schedule meetings with donors as requested by fundraising staff.

Data management (40%)

  • Generate reports, queries and lists from the Raiser’s Edge database as requested by Development & Communications team, including regularized monthly donation and fundraising activity reports.
  • Complete donation tracking forms and related revenue-processing tasks accurately and within required timelines.
  • Act as the team’s donor stewardship liaison, tracking and distributing thank-you call and reporting lists, preparing and mailing correspondence and helping make thank-you calls as needed.
  • Send monthly reminders to staff about upcoming grant reporting deadlines.
  • Record correspondence and proposals in Raiser’s Edge on behalf of senior management.

Other administrative duties (20%)

  • Manage administrative duties for the Vancouver office such as mail collection, cheque deposits and restocking office supplies.
  • Prepare expense reports on behalf of the Director of Development and Communications.
  • Monitor the BC general voicemail and inbox and route or reply to inquiries as appropriate.
  • Maintain clear task-tracking systems, monitor deadlines and follow up proactively on outstanding items.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Development Operations.

Success in this role requires comfort with detailed administrative work, consistent follow-through, and proactive communication in a collaborative, donor-focused environment. Training will be provided on NCC systems and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrates passion for environmental conservation or other mission-driven work through professional or volunteer experience, personal projects, or community involvement.
  • 1-2 years experience in administrative, customer service, or project coordination roles.
  • Experience using database systems to track and report information. Enthusiasm for learning new technical tools. Experience with Raiser's Edge is an asset.
  • Brings a customer service mindset and professional judgment to handling sensitive information in a donor-focused environment.
  • Values collaborative success and brings a supportive approach to working within cross-functional teams.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to track multiple tasks, deadlines and follow-ups while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Demonstrates initiative and sound judgment by anticipating needs, asking clarifying questions, flagging risks early and following through.
