Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Children and Families the First Nations Liaison
will be responsible for working with various First Nations in Manitoba by providing technical support as it relates to the restoration of First Nations jurisdiction. Utilizing the Sovereign Nations Family Laws the First Nations Liaison will support the customization and implementation of First Nations Laws related to children and families.



Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate meetings with First Nations including preparing formal presentations on the Sovereign Nations Family Laws to interested First Nations.
  • Collaborate with First Nations to support the customization or adaption of the Sovereign Nations Family Laws upon request by interested First Nations.
  • Engage with First Nations to develop a needs and capacity assessment for First Nations to identify strengths and gaps to help inform First Nations laws respecting children and families.
  • Assist and support engagement plans with First Nations to inform the customization of the First Nations Laws on children and families by using the Sovereign Nations Family Laws as a guide.
  • Assist in developing options for governance structures policies and procedures as it relates to First Nations Laws respecting children and families.
  • Act as a liaison between interested First Nations and the First Nations Family Advocate Office (FNFAO) to share best practices on prevention support and the reunification of families.
  • Work with First Nations to develop and maintain implementation plans for Law development respecting children and families to identify milestones and goals by scheduling regular check-ins with engaged First Nations to ensure successful planning.
  • Identify and raise any potential issues to internal management including identifying on-the-ground training and development resources necessary to meet.
  • Provide progress reports and data as requested.
  • Ensure tasks and projects are completed to maximize time efficiency.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • A Bachelor of Arts Degree or a Bachelor of Social Work Degree from a post-secondary institution and a combination of four years related experience and education.
  • Knowledge of First Nation issues related to the child welfare system.
  • Knowledge of traditional First Nation philosophy and contemporary practices.
  • Excellent analytical critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong planning project management and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of statistical methods techniques and information to develop analytical frameworks and/or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of a variety of automated computer systems and office procedures/practices.
  • Knowledge of writing composition and techniques editing and proofreading.
  • Excellent verbal skills and written skills and time management skills.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours and able to travel upon request.
  • Adhere to AMC policies and procedures with specific attention to attendance and professional ethics.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 drivers license and a reliable vehicle.
  • Must have a current satisfactory Criminal Record Check Clear Child Abuse Checks.
