Job description
Job Description

CIMA+’s Earth and Environment team have adopted sustainability as a core value and prioritize the environmental, social, and economic benefits of every project. Our engineers and certified technicians have the detailed knowledge of local conditions to provide the full range of environmental services for clients in both the public and private sectors. We have the skills to execute complex environmental projects, but we also integrate green solutions into every infrastructure, building, transportation, and energy project we undertake. Join us and immerse yourself in a dynamic, innovative, and collaborative environment where you’ll make a real impact. Together, we’ll push boundaries and go above what’s expected of us to meet the challenges of tomorrow and engineer a better world!

We are seeking a skilled Intermediate/Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our Earth and Environment team in Calgary, Alberta. The successful candidate will work within multidisciplinary teams on a variety of challenging and rewarding projects, contributing to the planning, design, and delivery of geotechnical engineering solutions across Alberta and Western Canada.

This role offers an excellent opportunity to further develop both technical expertise and project management skills in a collaborative, supportive environment. Depending on experience, the successful candidate will lead or support geotechnical investigations, technical analyses, reporting, design recommendations, construction support, client coordination, and the mentorship of junior staff.

Projects may include roads, buildings, municipal infrastructure, hydraulic structures, dams, slope stabilization, soil dynamics, earthworks, retaining structures, foundations, and erosion protection. You will have the opportunity to work with both public and private sector clients. While the focus is on Alberta-based projects, opportunities may arise to contribute to work across other regions of Canada.

We offer a flexible hybrid work model, enabling a mix of remote and office-based work from our Calgary North office location, allowing you to balance your professional and personal commitments.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead, support, and oversee geotechnical studies from planning to reporting, ensuring technical excellence, quality deliverables, and alignment with project objectives.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise geotechnical investigations, including borehole drilling, test pitting, in-situ sampling and testing, laboratory testing, and subcontractor coordination.
  • Analyze field, laboratory, and geological data to assess soil and rock characteristics, groundwater conditions, strength and deformation characteristics, and construction-related geotechnical risks.
  • Develop geotechnical engineering recommendations and prepare technical reports and memoranda, including foundation design, slope stability assessments, retaining structure recommendations, excavation and backfill guidelines, pavement considerations, and groundwater observations.
  • Contribute to the development of geotechnical designs, technical drawings, construction specifications, and tender documents for earthworks, retaining structures, slope stabilization, erosion protection, foundations, and other geo-structural elements.
  • Provide technical input during design and construction phases, working closely with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, subcontractors, and clients.
  • Support and/or lead construction reviews, site inspections, and field engineering services to verify that work is completed in general accordance with project specifications and design recommendations.
  • Establish and follow quality control procedures to ensure accuracy, consistency, and technical quality in geotechnical analyses, reports, drawings, and specifications.
  • Ensure all projects meet or exceed regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and sustainability goals.
  • Prepare proposals, work plans, fee estimates, and bid documents in response to internal and external requests for proposals.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with clients, contractors, subcontractors, regulators, and internal project teams.
  • Mentor, train, and supervise junior and intermediate staff, supporting their technical development and ensuring high-quality deliverables.
  • Manage multiple assignments independently while meeting project scope, schedule, budget, quality, and health and safety requirements.
  • Adhere to Health and Safety Standards and actively promote a safe work environment.
  • Complete additional duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering with a geotechnical focus, or a related engineering discipline.
  • A post-graduate degree in geotechnical engineering is considered an asset.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in Geotechnical Engineering, preferably in a consulting environment, with a proven track record of working on complex projects and collaborating on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Alberta, or eligibility for registration with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
  • Proven experience of planning and supervising field investigations and preparing geotechnical reports, including management of subcontractors and team members.
  • Strong understanding of soil mechanics, foundation design, earthworks, retaining structures, slope stability, groundwater conditions, and construction techniques.
  • Experience with geotechnical software applications for foundation design, slope stability, drainage, and finite element analysis.
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of programs and CAD systems.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, including geotechnical and geological engineers, as well as environmental specialists.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to clearly convey technical information to clients, contractors, stakeholders, and internal teams. Proficiency in French is an asset.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects independently.
  • Valid Class5 Driver’s License and willingness to travel to project sites throughout Alberta and, as required, other regions of Canada.
  • Integrity, team spirit, and a commitment to technical excellence and health and safety.

Assets:

  • Experience with Alberta transportation, municipal, and infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with Alberta provincial and municipal design standards, including City of Calgary requirements.
  • Experience in pavement structure evaluation and design.
  • Experience with dams, hydraulic structures, slope stabilization, erosion protection, or geohazard-related projects.
  • Experience with seismic analysis, soil dynamics, liquefaction assessment, or advanced numerical modelling.
  • Experience preparing proposals, managing budgets, developing client relationships, and supporting business development.
  • Previous experience mentoring junior engineers, technologists, or field staff.
  • Integrity, team spirit, and a commitment to excellence.

Why choose CIMA+? Because we offer you:

  • Comprehensive Group Benefits available from day one for all permanent employees working at least 20 hours per week
  • Employee and Family Assistance Program
  • Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) with up to 4% employer contribution

  • Flexible work schedule in a hybrid work mode

  • 3-5 weeks of vacation, based on years of relevant experience
  • Tailored training to improve your existing skills
