About Our Opportunity

Reporting directly to the Program Lead, the Adult Education Coordinator (AEC) is responsible for the coordination and administration of Nova Scotia School for Adult Learning (NSSAL) programs and services in the Metro Region (HRM) of Nova Scotia.

The positions are located in the Labour, Skills & Immigration offices in Halifax & Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. Travel within the region and outside the region, as required, is essential.

The AEC works with a teamwork approach in all activities within the Division and with other Divisions and Departments. The AEC will also administer, coordinate, and lead the Regional Planning Team in your assigned region, which consists of NSSAL service providers and other stakeholders.

As an integral member of the Division, the AEC will support the development of policies, provide analysis, strategic advice and make recommendations to management to ensure effective program delivery, office operations and service to the public.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Administers, coordinates, and leads the Regional Planning Team meeting which consists of NSSAL service providers and other organizations and stakeholders who work with clients who may benefit from adult learning programs.
  • Works as part of a team in all activities within the Adult Education Division and other Divisions within the Skills and Learning Branch.
  • Supports the development of policies, provides analysis and strategic advice, and makes recommendations to management to ensure effective program delivery, office operations, and service to the public.
  • Participates on, and / or leads, working groups and provides project management oversight.

Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in a related field, plus 5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of training and experience.

The AEC, will have knowledge of adult education principles and demonstrated experience in adult education practices. The AEC will have experience in program / project development and management and experience in a leadership role with various stakeholders.

Effective interpersonal, communication, public speaking, and presentation skills, along with the ability to demonstrate good judgement, strategic thinking, and effective decision-making skills.

Exceptional leadership and organizational skills are necessary and the ability to adapt to change is essential.

Strong negotiation skills are required to resolve regional issues and to develop new partnerships and programs.

Proficiency with general office software is required, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

The following skills and experience are considered assets :

  • Highly developed skills in proposal assessment and making well informed recommendations for funding.
  • Agreement management experience within the LaMPSS System.
  • Knowledge of regional learning needs and gaps in service.
  • Experience in providing information, advisement and making referrals to the public.
  • Knowledge about the NS High School Diploma for Adults and NSSAL service providers.
