Reporting to the Manager, Breeding Program, this position is responsible for conducting diverse operational activities related to field nursery evaluations within the Brassica napus canola breeding program.
The successful candidate will perform hands-on duties such as planting, irrigating, spraying, data collection, and harvesting canola nurseries.
Extensive experience with operation, maintenance and repair of related agricultural field equipment is also required.
What you will do :
Lead and perform work the Nutrien Way engaging in corporate policies, programs and practices, including SH&E regulations and standards, to bring our Culture of Care to life
Work with plant breeders to achieve breeding program goals using your knowledge and application of best practices (agronomic, equipment, digital) to establish a successful nursery field program
Operate, repair and properly maintain agricultural field and laboratory equipment
Manage field locations ensuring proper crop rotations, agronomy, pest control and phytosanitary conditions are maintained to ensure success of the nursery program
Coordinate and participate in daily field nursery operations from planting through harvest
Gather, summarize and input experimental data. Report findings and communicate with plant breeders as necessary
Partner with seasonal support staff, demonstrating leadership while training, coaching and supporting completion of research work assignments
Support contra-season nursery programs as necessary, including possible travel to Chile during the winter
Oversee nursery seed inventories including storage, transportation, handoff and disposal according to defined protocol
Liaises with equipment and supplies vendors to determine appropriate program equipment, inputs and supplies and coordinates purchase, delivery and storage as necessary
Assist in conducting field tours and communicating appropriate information about research programs
Utilize and leverage available digital technologies to complete work accurately and efficiently and improve existing processes
Perform other related duties, as required
What you will bring :
Diploma in Agriculture or Natural Sciences. Degree in Agriculture an asset. Directly relevant experience may be considered in lieu of education
Commitment to safety, attention to detail, self-motivated and demonstrated leadership skills to coordinate, participate in and supervise multiple simultaneous projects.
Effective team building and communication skills as well as ability to coordinate readily with others
Working technical knowledge of agronomic practices such as soil fertility management, herbicide application and integrated pest management strategies related to production of canola
Strong, demonstrated technical knowledge and experience related to operation, maintenance, and repair of small plot agricultural field equipment
Two (2) seasons of demonstrated small plot research experience
Valid class 5 driver’s license, G endorsement an asset. Willingness to acquire G endorsement
Pesticide Applicator’s certificate an asset
Proficiency in MS Office, experience using relational database software an asset
