Job Summary
The Assistant Track Supervisor leads daily operations for a defined region, overseeing track inspections, repairs, and rail maintenance. The role supports the Track Supervisor in ensuring safe, efficient track conditions.
Main Responsibilities
- Lead engineering operations per CN’s operating.
- Supervise track gangs, employees, and high‑rail activities.
- Manage engineering operations, ensuring compliance with safe work procedures, Transport Canada guidelines, and CN standards.
- Provide coaching, guidance, and regular performance monitoring to employees.
- Conduct investigations, recommend corrective actions, and respond to grievances in line with collective agreements and company policies.
- Oversee budgets and workforce productivity within CN policies and the Five Guiding Principles.
- Communicate track condition and daily production information to senior management.
- Ensure track safety through regulatory inspections, input findings into the Track Inspection System (TIS), and monitor track condition.
- Follow up on reported track issues to maintain compliance with standards.
- Participate in derailment activities and work with Transportation and Mechanical to establish causes and future prevention.
- Perform safety audits for the unionized workforce and conduct safety engagements.
- Plan, schedule, and perform track repairs and maintenance.
- Respond to emergencies.
Working Conditions
The role involves office work and outdoor duties in varied weather and environmental conditions. Irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, are required. The incumbent must travel up to 50% of the time across the assigned territory without advance notice, lift up to 70 lbs, and meet tight deadlines under pressure.
Requirements
Experience
3 to 5 years of safety compliance experience.Troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills.Relevant work experience in similar conditions or a regulatory / safety environment.Budget management experience.Labour relations experience (interpretation of collective agreements, grievance response, union negotiations, discipline).Experience supervising a unionized workforce.Any of the above is an asset.Education / Certification / Designation
High School Diploma or GED.Bachelor’s Degree (asset).Valid Driver’s Licence.Certified in Railroad Operating Signals (asset).Competencies
