INDIGENOUS YOUTH CARE WORKER - REPLACEMENT STEP #1 Position Description : There is a position available for an Indigenous Youth Care Worker Replacement Step #1 at Robert Ogilvie Elementary School.

Applications must be completed online and will be accepted until noon, July 2, 2024. The role of the Indigenous Youth Care Worker (IYCW) is to provide identified Indigenous students with opportunities to enhance their social-emotional well-being while ensuring their academic success and promoting cultural opportunities.

The IYCW must have the ability to work independently, and collaboratively, with teachers and the Indigenous Education Centre staff.

The IYCW's responsibilities vary according to the students' and school needs but all have the ultimate objective of assisting students in order to foster educational success.

Hours of work : Six (6) hrs / day, five (5) days per weekDuties to Commence : September 3, 2024, until September 27, 2024, or upon return of the incumbentWork Year Base : Ten (10) months per yearCommencing Salary : $31.

94 / hr. Duties : Collect and maintain Indigenous student self-identification and parent consent forms (1701s) to ensure audit compliance.

Reports directly to the site Administrative Officer(s) and District Indigenous Principal. In cooperation with the site Administrative Officer(s), the District Indigenous Principal, and the Indigenous Support Teacher, creates an appropriate schedule for working with their Indigenous students.

Maintain accurate and comprehensive student records as directed by the site Administrative Officer(s) and the District Indigenous Principal.

Attend IYCW meeting as requested by the District Indigenous Principal. Provide motivation and encouragement for Indigenous students to work to their full potential so that they, and others, can recognize their special gifts and talents.

Provide academic support to Indigenous students' individually, within small group settings, classrooms, or designated areas.

Monitors and provides support to Indigenous students and their families, as well as being the liaison between the school and the Indigenous communities within their assigned school catchment.

Provide general one-to-one, or group based, socio-emotional support to Indigenous students. Provide directed one-to-one, social-emotional support as needed.

Provide crisis intervention and management both individually and as part of a crisis management team. Assist the school based team with connection to outside agencies.

Transport Indigenous students to designated counselling services, on a limited basis. Provide Indigenous perspective to all students and staff at their assigned school(s) such as : Connecting students and staff to resources Enhancing school and staff understanding of Indigenous world views and perspectives Ability to promote Indigenous healing practices such as;

circle talks, seven teachings, healing circles and other relevant Indigenous traditions IYCW may be called upon to act as a guest speaker to supplement lessons Organize and facilitate culturally relevant experiences for students both in the school and in the community Demonstrated knowledge of the Ministry of Education graduation program.

Assumes other responsibilities that are site and program specific. Attend directed professional development in-services.

When requested by the site Administrative Officer(s) or District Principal of Indigenous Education, conduct home visits.

By their presence the IYCW must be a positive Indigenous role model for students, staff and community. Performs other job related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications and Attributes : Grade 12 or equivalency Minimum of two years university or college course work in areas relating to youth care and counseling Training in Crisis Prevention Intervention (15 hour certificate program) Two years experience in Conflict Resolution, Anger Management, and Life Skills Coaching, working with youth, with diagnosed behaviour or mental health disorders (i.

e. FAS, ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Childhood Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, and Eating Disorder) Valid Class 5 B.

C. drivers licence and access to a reliable vehicle Clean Drivers Abstract Level 1 First Aid Food Safe Proven knowledge and experience with Indigenous culture is a requirement Ability to work independently and set priorities Ability to manage difficult conversations in a professional manner WHMIS Certificate and other online safety training provided by the District to be completed within the probationary period Good interpersonal skills and the ability to be an integral part of a team Preference will be given to qualified applicants of Indigenous ancestry (pending Human Rights Variance).
