DUTIES : The primary assignment of the successful candidate will be to instruct students, facilitate learning, and evaluate student progress for students enrolled in the GIS Applications Specialist Post Diploma Program by planning, organizing, and managing learning activities and resources in both classroom and laboratory environments. The instructor will :
- incorporate their own teaching style to existing lesson plans by preparing and implementing various instructional strategies, techniques, and learning models to achieve specified learning outcomes and meet course objectives.
- establish student performance objectives and evaluation methods and meet with students regularly to gauge and evaluate progress and identify and resolve problem areas in teaching and learning.
- communicate effectively at a level appropriate to the ability of students and support an emotionally safe learning environment that is conducive to learning by maintaining appropriate classroom management following College policies and procedures.
- actively participate in and contribute to accreditation activities to ensure the program is of the highest standard.
- be responsible for providing instructional support to students working on major GIS projects, which are directly related to fulfilling specific learning objectives of the program.
- The teaching assignment may include any courses offered in the program relating to python programming, database management (MS Access & Oracle), geo-spatial analysis, and project planning.
QUALIFICATIONS : The successful candidate must :
- demonstrate a strong working knowledge of GIS software applications particularly the ESRI suite of GIS products.
- demonstrate knowledge of database management and associated automation and customization environments
- have an understanding of current teaching / learning methods and classroom management.
- have well-developed communication, analytical, conflict resolution, and organizational skills.
- be able to work independently while establishing and maintaining effective working relationships in a teaching environment.
- show a strong commitment to student success strategies and initiatives.
The above skills would normally have been acquired through :
- successful completion of an undergraduate degree in Applied Technology Geographic Information Systems, Geographic Information Systems, or an alternative degree with a specialization / concentration in geospatial applications supplemented with an Advanced Diploma / Post Diploma in GIS.
- Educational credentials must be supplemented with a minimum of four years of recent, relevant work experience.
- A Bachelor of Education (Secondary / Post-Secondary) Degree, eligibility for membership in an appropriate professional association, experience teaching at the post-secondary level, and programming skills with experience in developing desktop and web-based GIS applications would all be considered assets.
SALARY : Commensurate with qualifications and experience in accordance with College of the North Atlantic Faculty Collective Agreement.
