POSITION SUMMARY

In this role, you will develop, review, modify, and maintain new and current company policies and guidelines. As the Policy Writer, you will work under the Policy Analyst and develop strong and effective working relationships with colleagues, partners, and organizations, including federal, provincial and external stakeholders.

You will work with teams across the organization to plan policy development. Your main responsibility is to ensure that company policies are clear and easy to understand by employees and those they affect, including clients, members, and external bodies.

You will oversee keeping records of any policy timelines, changes, including revisions, amendments, updates, and deletions.

This is a term contract position with an end date of June 15th, 2027, with the possibility of extension.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Writes clear and concise policies, guidelines, codes, and rules for performing activities within the company.
  • Reviews and revises current policy and guidelines for each area based on Policy Analyst and senior management direction.
  • Interprets, applies, updates, and provides advice on existing policies and guidelines.
  • Develops and maintains procedures for policy and amendment submissions, tracking, approvals, and communication.
  • Assists the Policy Analyst with research, analysis and preparation of briefings, reports, publications, strategies, discussion papers, summaries, and other documents to support policy and planning.
  • Ensures policies work in sync and that they don’t negatively affect the other or call a policy application into question.
  • Recommends visual standards for document design and develops and modifies the existing policies and guidelines to adhere to current documentation standards.
  • Evaluates different types of policies and makes recommendations for changes.
  • Ensures that revised and new policies are implemented, and a lifecycle is maintained for each document.
  • Coordinates activities and information flow related to the policy initiatives / projects developed.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participates on internal and / or external committees as required.
  • Attends, summarizes, and take notes for meetings and propose follow-up, including briefing senior management and others as needed.
  • Provides status, verbal or written reports at frequencies determined by management and in the format requested.
  • Keeps records of all policy revisions, updates, and deletions.
  • Works with Records Manager to ensure compliance with proper storage and tracking of policies, laws, codes, and applicable documents.
  • Meets set policy and project deadlines.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your Supervisor, Manager, Director, or the ED / CAO or Chief and Council.

WHAT YOU BRING

Education

  • A University degree or an acceptable combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Recent, relevant, and significant experience in policy development and report preparation

Experience

  • Experience working with First Nations leadership and communities.
  • Experience in policy development and analysis (ideally in First Nations issues and priorities).
  • Experience in research, writing, and note-taking.
  • Experience in community engagement or consultative processes.

Requirements

  • Proficient computer skills with the Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams.)
  • Proficient interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Ability to agree as well as adhere to Seabird Island Band Human Resources (HR), Finance, and Information Technology (IT) Policies and Procedures, etc.
  • Knowledge, respect, and understanding of Stó : lō culture, history, traditions, and language is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with First Nations community is considered an asset.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
