Job description

Competition # :   47817

Department :   Justice

Location :   SYDNEY

Type of Employment :   Permanent and Term

Union Status :   NSGEU - NSPG

Closing Date :   05-Feb-26  (Applications are accepted until 11 : 59 PM Atlantic Time)

About Us

The Justice Supports and Services Division of the Department of Justice consists of three programs : each providing Nova Scotians access to critical programming and support.  The Maintenance Enforcement Program helps to facilitate the payment of court-ordered child and spousal support; the NS Restorative Justice Program provides opportunities for those harmed by crime, the person who caused the harm and the communities affected to communicate (directly or indirectly) about the causes, circumstances, and impact of that crime, and to address their related needs. Victim Services offers support to victims of crime as their case moves through the justice system.

The Maintenance Enforcement Program (MEP) is a free service of the Nova Scotia Department of Justice that helps you make or receive court-ordered maintenance payments when your court order is enrolled with the program and can take steps to enforce maintenance orders when payments are not made. The MEP operates under the laws set out in the Maintenance Enforcement Act.  Benefits of enrolling in the MEP include : we keep an accurate record of all payments made and received; we protect your personal information; we act as a buffer between payors and recipients; we work with the MEPs in other provinces if the payor or recipient live outside Nova Scotia; and we can take enforcement action if payments are not made. No one other than MEP can enforce an order to pay maintenance.

About Our Opportunity

Reporting to the Coordinator, the Enrollment Clerk is responsible for the registration of maintenance orders and separation agreements.  The Clerk establishes payment schedules for each case utilizing information from Court orders, and updates and maintains the Maintenance Enforcement Program database in accordance with legislation, policy, and procedures.  The incumbent is required to extrapolate information from source documents, and ensure the integrity of information contained in the database.  The Clerk acts as a referral source to the Program client group, responds to general enquiries, provides assistance as needed, and processes correspondence.

Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this opportunity, you have four years related experience (in an office environment with alphanumeric data entry); or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.  Experience and competency in an automated environment are required.

You can calculate various types of payment schedules, prioritize, and manage a demanding and diverse workload, meet deadlines, and work under pressure.  Experience in the interpretation of Court orders and knowledge of legal documents, forms, procedures, and terminology would be an asset.  Solid organizational, time-management and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to use sound judgement and exercise discretion is required.

We will assess the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools : written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Equivalency

Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.

Benefits

Based on the employment status and union agreement, the Government of Nova Scotia offers its employees a wide range of benefits such as a Defined Benefit Pension Plan , Health, Dental, Life Insurance, General illness, Short and Long Term Disability, Vacation and Employee and Family Assistance Programs.  For information on all our Benefit program offerings, click here : Benefits for government employees .

  • This position requires a high demand for accuracy and attention to detail.
