Position Title : Education Manager- Full-Time Permanent
Position Description : The Educational Department works to provide inclusive educational supports, resources and funding to the Fort William First Nation members. Working under the Director of Community Well-Being, the Education Manager will be the primary contact responsible for developing, organizing and managing the implementation of all educational programs and services available to ensure high standards of excellence in educational programs and operating systems. The Education Manager also oversees program admissions, data management, communications, and public relations within the program. The Education Manager provides exceptional management, leadership and guidance to ensure that all staff operating under their supervision remain primarily focused on the mission and goals of Fort William First Nation.
Job Duties / Major Responsibilities :
Oversee education department operations including staff supervision, scheduling, performance reviews, timekeeping, and leave tracking
Ensure that all Fort William First Nation students have access to educational services by working with parents, guardians and community members
Build and maintain positive relationships with children, parents and the community
Oversee the following programs and areas; education admissions and reporting, student nutrition program, school bussing, adult education, elementary, secondary and post secondary education, as well as the Fort William First Nation Junior / Senior Kindergarten Program
Maintain working relationships with Thunder Bay District Catholic School Board; Lakehead Public School Board; Lac De Mile School board and attend all necessary board meetings
Organize and conduct elections to designate a Fort William First Nation School Board Trustee for Thunder Bay District Catholic School Board, and Lakehead Public School Boards alike
Maintain the Student Nutrition Program, ensuring there is enough nutritious snacks available for all students registered and purchase supplies when needed
Maintain servicing records of school buses to ensure buses are safe for transportation, keep reports from bus monitors, ensure buses have all necessary supplies for drivers and riders.
Assist with the hiring and managing of all Educational Department Staff, participate in additional hiring committees as requested
Manage staff; develop appropriate goals for staff and coach staff on the achievement of these goals, address performance concerns and provide guidance when needed
Update Education Policies annually and create new policies when necessary (e.g., school bus, post-secondary, bursaries, drivers education, etc.)
Monitor the academic progress of students when applicable to ensure they are progressing successfully and make recommendations to adjust services as needed
Assist with student attendance / discipline issues and making recommendations regarding retention in school or expulsion from school
Review and vet application forms for available student funding; School Start Up Payments, Educational Travel Bursary, Drivers Education, and Graduation Awards
Secure and coordinate funding efforts to ensure that schools have adequate resources for improving facilities, purchasing new equipment, providing adequate services.
Plan the Annual Graduation Dinner for Fort William First Nation students graduating from Grade 8, Grade 12, and post secondary schools, issue graduation payments to graduates
Update Post Secondary Funding application for students annually. Monitor post secondary school applications, budget and students to ensure they are following the Fort William Post Secondary School policy
Submit required reports to funders in an accurate and timely manner
Monitor and track spending of the monthly education budget
Attend and organize team and management meetings as necessary
Additional related duties as required
Working Conditions :
Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals
Overtime and on-call as required
Qualifications / Requirements :
Bachelors degree in education, administration, or related field
5+ years experience working in education, with at least 2 years in a leadership role
Vulnerable Sectors Criminal Reference Check
Proven track record of designing and implementing successful educational programs
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
Experience in supervising, motivating and coaching staff support staff to follow program goals
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Work, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
