Unit Summary

The Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program (HRLMP) is a collaborative program funded and operated jointly by Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph's Hospital. The Program is committed to change and innovation, through education, service and research, to bring the highest quality science into healthcare for the benefit of the community and to participate in the clinical application and interpretation of the science.

Position Summary

The Genetics Medical Laboratory Technologist carries out a diverse range of work activities, ensuring all duties and responsibilities and handled with accuracy and efficiency to provide quality results. The Genetics Medical Laboratory Technologist will perform all aspects of sample processing and analysis using a wide variety of advanced Genetic laboratory applications. The Genetics Medical Laboratory Technologist will identify incidents and non-conformances, escalate concerns as appropriate, document quality control, and participate in quality assurance activities.

Qualifications

  • Member in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO), registered in Molecular Genetics
  • Practical working experience in a Clinical Genetics laboratory
  • Experience with computer database management and Laboratory Information Systems
  • Proficient in isolating DNA from several tissue types including blood, fresh tissues, FFPE, tissue culture cells, amniotic fluid cells and CVS
  • Proficient in molecular diagnostic techniques including PCR, Sanger sequencing, real-time PCR, array technology, Next Generation Sequencing
  • Perform troubleshooting of test results and equipment, escalate as needed to senior staff
  • Proficient in screening for and detecting mutations in inherited genetics disorders, such as hemoglobinopathy syndromes, using allele-specific assays and automated nucleotide sequencing
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
