ABOUT THE ROLE

The Market Analyst is primarily accountable for analytical and modeling support with a focus on the Alberta electricity market and will also support corporate decisions across other electricity markets where TransAlta operates assets. Given the rapid pace of change in the Alberta market, both from a fundamental perspective, as well as the evolving regulatory landscape, the analyst will provide their actionable guidance on how all these factors interrelate to support decision-making. In addition, the analyst will provide cross-functional support to other business units with the objective of meeting financial and growth targets.

This role is based out of our Head Office in Downtown Calgary, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Accountable for creating, refining and maintaining fundamental modeling in the Alberta electricity market out through the long-term but with a specific focus on the next 3-5 years
  • Support the Manager, Market Analysis in providing advice to senior management on the fundamental developments in the Alberta power market
  • Provide commercial intelligence and analytical modeling support that guides corporate strategy and business development decisions

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following must-have qualifications and experience :

  • University degree in Economics, Engineering, Finance, or Computer Science
  • The ideal candidate will have at least 8-10 years of experience working in electricity markets. Consideration will be given to candidates that have less experience, but a strong skill set. Preference will be given to candidates who have worked in the Alberta electricity market before.
  • Understanding of energy derivatives and financial risk measures
  • Understanding of energy market fundamentals, power market and power asset modeling, and mathematical modeling techniques
  • Quantitative skills are important : Demonstrated practical knowledge of Python, SQL, Excel VBA, and general competence working with large datasets, helping to visualize and understand how fundamental factors influence financial outcomes
  • Communications skills are important : must be able to confidently communicate complex subject matter to non-experts and make recommendations
  • Decision-making – support company decisions around assets, M&A, business development, etc.
  • Help us understand market rule and regulatory changes and what the impact will be to prices, supply / demand balance, unit economics
