The Mustard Seed is committed to helping people who are experiencing homelessness and poverty transition toward and maintain sustainable and healthy lifestyles. This position oversees the operation of the kitchen at the Red Deer location and is responsible for leading meal service operations for guests who are actively participating in programs and community events that may include meals.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of Food Services in Red Deer including shelter meals, community meals, school lunch program and food hamper production
- Lead the Chef, School Lunch Program Coordinator, Delivery Driver and other part-time and casual relief staff in the department
- Collaborate with Chef and School Lunch Program Coordinator on ordering the food and supplies necessary to maintain the successful daily operation of Food Services
- Oversee and maintain food budgets in each program
- Implement the procedures, standards and policies / guidelines of AHS regarding how food is prepared, handled, and stored; liaise with AHS
- Supervise cleaning of all Food Services areas to ensure AHS health and safety standards are met
- Identify problem areas and suggest methods to improve overall operations of the kitchen
- Provide input to and assist in the implementation of program evaluation
- Provide direction and supervision to staff to assist them to perform their tasks in an effective and efficient manner, including creating work schedules
- Meet regularly with direct report staff and facilitate Annual Performance Reviews
- Provide training for program staff in food handling procedures
- Ensure staff provide the appropriate reception, acknowledgement, and encouragement for donors, serving groups, and volunteers
- Undertake progressive discipline for employees as needed, under the direction of and with your supervisor, including documentation of actions taken
- Assist with interviews, as requested
- Implement creative strategies to involve volunteers within all areas of Food Services, in conjunction with Volunteer Engagement department
- Provide direction, supervision, and training in food handling procedures to volunteer meal groups, community education groups & volunteers
- Keep a current inventory of all kitchen equipment
- Manage GIK partnerships & donations
- Track statistics and prepare monthly reports
- Serve on internal and external committees, as requested
- Assist in identification of program equipment and materials
- Maintain client confidentiality
- Attend meetings and training, as required
- Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Formally trained in Food Services and a minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a commercial kitchen environmentValid certificate from the Alberta Health Services Food Safe courseDesire to serve in a Christian ministryBudgetary oversight experience requiredAbility to lead a team consisting of paid staff, volunteers, and clientsExperience overseeing staff in kitchen is considered a strong assetGood organizational skills are a necessity for menu planning, staff scheduling, food ordering and planning special eventsAbility to resolve conflicts as they ariseStrong working knowledge in Microsoft Office Programs (i.e., Word, Outlook, Excel)Ability to learn new software programs as The Mustard Seed uses several in its operationWillingness to take any necessary training The Mustard Seed requires – NVCI, First Aid etc.Valid driver’s license, a reliable vehicle and $2 million liability insurance required; food pick-ups may be requiredWORKING CONDITIONS
