Building Materials Industry

New Westminster, British Columbia

Base $100-120k + bonus + Extended Healthcare + Pension

Client : Confidential (Established distribution business in BC and Alberta)

Our client is an employer of choice who has an established distribution business based in the Lower Mainland and servicing both BC and Alberta. They provide design based products to the construction industry that are high-end, high-quality products very much on trend in the design world.

They are seeking an experienced Purchasing Manager with the ability to lead a small team and represent purchasing at the board table. This person will be formally trained in purchasing and be able to lead a small dynamic purchasing team.

This is a role that will balance your strategic vision with streetsmarts and it is important that you can connect purchasing decision making and planning to the ebbs and flows of the market. As the company continues to scale, the purchasing decisions are becoming increasingly complex meaning a strength in data analysis, continuous improvement of systems and processes, and an ability to continually see the big picture are essential.

The role will be extremely fullfilling on the basis that decisions made by this person directly impact the success of the business.

Job Purpose :  Drive purchasing excellence in a leading building materials distribution business, ensuring a streamlined supply chain, cost optimization, and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities :

  • Develop, refine, and implement strategic purchasing initiatives to optimize costs and enhance supply chain efficiencies.
  • Negotiate favorable contracts with suppliers to secure competitive pricing and payment terms, fostering mutually beneficial relationships.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to align purchasing activities with organizational goals, understanding and meeting their needs.
  • Conduct market research to stay abreast of industry trends, supplier capabilities, pricing fluctuations, and supply chain conditions.
  • Manage supplier relationships in coordination with the Director of Merchandising, including ongoing performance evaluation and claim resolution.
  • Monitor and analyze inventory levels, implementing strategies to avoid shortages or excesses.
  • Oversee day-to-day purchasing activities, holding team members accountable to performance goals.
  • Provide training, coaching, and development opportunities for the team.
  • Exemplify company values, fostering a culture of respect, excellence, and accountability.
  • Prepare and present comprehensive reports to senior management on purchasing activities, performance metrics, and cost savings.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and sourcing-related laws.

  • Core Competencies :

  • Certification in procurement or supply chain management.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of purchasing management experience.
  • Proven leadership in coaching and developing teams.
  • In-depth knowledge of procurement principles, strategies, and best practices.
  • Strong skills in budgeting, cost optimization, and negotiation.
  • Proficient in inventory management.
  • Highly developed analytical skills.
  • Collaborative mindset with cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in procurement software and systems.
  • Adaptability and resilience in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools.
