Job description

ExcelSense Technologies Corp. is a global leader in the design and manufacturing of maintenance-free self-cleaning cameras and laser platforms for autonomous equipment and remote-monitoring in harsh industrial environments.

ExcelSense is continuing to grow aggressively in 2025 and beyond, along with a number of new product releases on the horizon. Our core technology is increasingly being adopted in different market sectors such as mining, oil & gas, and autonomous vehicles.

We have an exciting opening within our dynamic team for a Prototype Assembly Technician . This role involves hands-on assembly of early prototype products, including working with PCBs and other mechanical hardware. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with engineering and operations teams to accelerate the product lifecycle and deliver robust, reliable systems to our customers.

ExcelSense strives to achieve a comfortable, safe, and positive work environment for all of its employees. A successful member of the ExcelSense team will have a great team attitude, with an emphasis on maintaining positive and respectful relationships with all of their colleagues.

This opportunity is located on site at our Richmond office.

Role Overview :

As an entry-level Prototype Assembly Technician, you'll be a hands-on builder assembling and testing electromechanical prototypes (PCBA + wiring + mechanisms), and providing feedback for product improvement. The ideal candidate is a problem-solver who thrives in a team but can also work independently, delivering projects on time and to spec. When instructions are undefined, input on process improvement is valued. You may also support engineering with repairs, modifications, and upgrades to production systems. We seek a highly skilled, flexible, and quick-learning individual with a can-do attitude, adept in both mechanical and electrical disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assembling prototype and pilot products based on drawings, schematics, and limited work instructions.
  • Performing initial setup checks, including power on, sensor verification, current draw, and functionality.
  • Executing light rework tasks such as soldering, crimping / terminating small connectors, tidying cable routing, and torquing fasteners.
  • Documenting clear notes, photos, and redlines, suggesting DFM items, and updating basic work instructions.
  • Assembling jigs / fixtures to enhance build efficiency (e.g., alignment plates, go / no-go gauges).
  • Assisting with prototype kitting and part readiness, identifying shortages or alternate parts, and conducting incoming checks on custom parts.
  • Maintaining a safe and organized proto bench through adherence to ESD habits, proper tool care, calibration, and 5S tidiness.
  • Collaborating with senior engineers on root-cause analysis, testing ideas, logging results, and iterating on solutions.

Required Skills

  • 1-2 years of engineering or assembly experience.
  • Ability to read basic mechanical drawings and schematics, with the capability to assemble products without detailed instructions.
  • Proficiency in engineering workshop fundamentals, including the use of hand tools, soldering, crimping small connectors (e.g., JST / Molex), torque drivers, microscope work, and adherence to ESD discipline.
  • Experience with electrical testing, including DMM and bench PSU, with the ability to execute checklists and record accurate data.
  • Strong attention to detail and high level of organization.
  • Clear communication skills, with a focus on thorough documentation and effective collaboration with design, test, and manufacturing personnel.
  • Additional Skills

  • Familiarity with motors (DC / stepper / gear motors), encoders, current sensors, and seals / O-rings.
  • Familiarity with 3D printing, laser-cutting , CNC machining, and other fabrication methods.
  • Basic scripting for test or logging (Python / Arduino) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical and electrical principles.
  • Degree or diploma in Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Electrical Engineering is beneficial.
