Purpose of the Role : Reporting to the Senior Manager, Controllership, the Manager, is accountable for i) Leading tax compliance and planning for the Company, ii) Preparing, filing and ensuring that the payment of taxes are completed on time and in compliance with commodity tax and corporate income tax laws for all legal entities within the group, iii) Researching and reporting on tax queries iv) Liaising with auditors, and iv) preparing / finalizing comprehensive tax memos related to new business, tax structures or tax planning

Core Accountabilities

  • Responsible for the completion of preparing and reviewing Canadian HST, and provincial commodity tax returns with related supporting schedules and working papers, including implementing improvements in the overall filing process
  • Organize and arranges for timely payment according to deadlines of federal and provincial commodity taxes and follow-up on all tax payments
  • Oversee the Canadian corporate income tax and partnership returns, payments, working papers and other compliance to ensure accurate and timely reporting of taxes
  • Ownership of preparing quarterly / annual deferred income tax provision and book to tax differences
  • Ownership of preparing quarterly / year end note disclosures related to income taxes in accordance with IFRS accounting standards
  • Ownerhship of income and commodity tax account reconciliations and related working papers
  • Prepares tax memos and position papers to support company tax strategies or new revenue streams
  • Manages government audit process and works directly with government auditors including gathering working papers and supporting documents
  • Maintains organized audit ready files with appropriate documentation that are fully referenced and supportedLeads engagements with external consultants related to tax reviews or recovery. Leads process improvements over tax compliance and reporting for the Company
  • Leads the development and maintenance of internal controls and process improvements along with documentation for tax functions
  • Ensures internal tax procedural documentation is up to date, including any contemporaneous documentation required by the CRA
  • Implementation of commodity and income tax requirements in ERP system, including automation to the tax compliance process
  • Communicates effectively with Finance and other departments to maintain and implement commodity tax policies and compliance

Qualifications and Skills

  • Undergraduate University Degree in a financial discipline
  • 5-8 years experience in Canadian tax compliance with extensive knowledge of commodity tax and corporate income tax accounting related to partnerships and corporations
  • Knowledgeable of IFRS accounting principles
  • Has completed the CICA in-depth tax course
  • Knowledge of business processes, specifically sales and purchases and legal entity financial reporting
  • Demonstrates ability to use advanced Excel skills for compiling and manipulating data
  • Demonstrates ability to use data query and reporting tools (Access, Power BI or similar)
  • Experience with Oracle or an ERP system and accounting models, and Tax software
  • Strong time management skills, ability to prioritize different projects and work efficiently under pressure
  • Effective analytical, problem solving and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Self-motivated individual with ability to work independently and efficiently under predetermined time schedules
  • Ability to multi-task and work effectively with internal departments and tax authorities with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ownership of both direct / indirect taxation for all legal entities within the group. Experience with US tax reporting and transfer-price rules an asset

    This is a hybrid role.

    Hiring Range : 92,600 - 118,000

    The hiring range has been established, however, the final salary recommendation will be determined based off the level of experience, education requirement, external market conditions and internal equity.

    In this position, you will be eligible for Lifelabs annual bonus.
