Job description

The Manager, Subcontracts leads all subcontracts management operations from beginning to completion with customers and suppliers, ensuring that all objectives and goals set out in the subcontracts are implemented and achieved. This role manages a team of supply chain professionals.

Duties and Accountabilities

  • Leads the delivery of a major part of company’s subcontract management program while taking ownership for a high number of mission-critical subcontracts.
  • Collaborates closely with project subcontractors as part of the tender process, leading to subcontracts that meet the organization's business objectives.
  • Negotiates terms and conditions of complex project subcontracts to meet the organization's business objectives.
  • Participates in the selection of external consultants or advisors to deliver key projects and / or ad hoc services; ensures that business objectives and requirements are clearly understood and records outcomes, taking appropriate remedial action where needed.
  • Identifies and communicates the actions needed to implement the function's strategy and business plan within the business area or department; explains the relationship to the broader organization's mission, vision, and values motivates people to achieve business goals.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, Science, Finance or Law, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in Procurement including experience managing the procurement of services and large / strategic equipment in project environments, preferably in the shipbuilding industry.
  • Experience in planning and managing resources to deliver predetermined objectives.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in supervision and coordination of people and other resources to achieve specific end results.
  • Professional certification or training through an accredited procurement society such as, the Purchasing Management Association of Canada (PMAC) or New Supply Chain Management Professional (SCMP), the Logistics Institute (P. Log.), American Purchasing Society, or the Association for Operations Management (APICS) CPIM program is desirable.
  • Shipbuilding experience is an asset.

  • Knowledge and skills to negotiate independently, while providing guidance and training to others on how to help the organization, by acquiring consensus between two or more internal or external parties who may have different interests.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, problem-solve and multi-task
  • Understanding of procurement processes and corporate governance principles.
  • Knowledge of materials management.
  • Expertise in contracting strategies including drafting and execution.
  • Proficiency in expediting, quality surveillance and logistics.
