NOW HIRING : Associate Family Law Lawyer (1-3 year calls prioritized, but not necessary)

Inside Passage Law is a small and mighty Family Law and Mediation Firm in Kelowna, BC. We are looking for an associate, junior or otherwise, to join our firm. This person must have strong skills in legal research and writing, a desire to advocate, negotiate and to learn and try new things. They will communicate early and often and ask questions. The person we hire will be good at working independently and in a group, as we do operate as a team here.
Manners, empathy, and a sense of humour, professionalism and ethical conduct are essential, as are resilience and self-care.
The founder of Inside Passage Law has 18+ years of experience and knowledge in mediation, litigation and all forms of negotiation. She wishes to share this, and our steady flow of clients, with a new or new-to-us lawyer excited about doing meaningful work and doing your best. We take a mindful approach to Family Law and consider ourselves peacemakers, although peacemaking isn’t always peaceful.
The official position start date will be March 1, 2026.
YOUR JOB STORY
Within two weeks you will
- Reliably be checking and responding to messages daily. You’ll ensure you are aware of key priorities, new developments and that you are scheduling, tracking and completing the right follow-up tasks.
- Getting to know our clients and files.
- Work closely with our senior lawyer and other team members learning our systems for file management, client communications, team communications, scheduling, confidentiality, billing, basically how our office and our practice works.
- Be up-to-speed with key files and priorities delegated to you and take ownership of the projects, tasks and client files delegated to you.
- Begin meeting with clients, advising them, representing them at court, and supporting them as needed, perhaps even in mediation and / or negotiation.
- Record your own billable time reliably.
- Draft legal documents such as letters, court pleadings, Notices of Application, affidavits, agreements, with supervision.
- Learn how to work most effectively with other team members (Legal Assistants or Paralegals, Lawyer).
- Have reviewed the Supreme Court Family Rules and other family law key materials.
Within a month you will
Be effectively representing a small number of your own clients.Understand all our legal and mediation services and client onboarding processes.Be comfortable explaining our core services and fees and be able to fully onboard new clients.Manage the Master List with our team, and make sure there is a next task diarized for every single file in your care and that when one task is completed, another is written in the Master List to replace it until the file is closed.Advise clients.Draft legal documents with less supervision.Review and approve of invoices to clients, with supervision.Represent clients at court, mediation or negotiation.Within three months you will
Be running your own client files and responsible for all aspects of them, including delegating appropriately to other members of the team.Be involved in attracting new clients to Inside Passage Law by doing really good, ethical and effective work, helping our clients feel heard and seeking out opportunities to introduce yourself in the community ie. get your name out there! Be a member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia.Have the essential mix of experience, training and skills to understand or learn how BC’s legal system works.Be fluent in English, both verbally and in writing.Be a resident of the Kelowna, BC area.Be looking for a regular full-time position that fits your goals for the medium to long term.Have a growth mindset, be smart and emotionally intelligent, lighthearted, and have a great sense of humour - we laugh a lot.
