About MRU

Founded in 1910 and located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mount Royal University grew into a vibrant college in the 1930s and became a mid-sized university in 2009. Mount Royal has carved out a distinct niche by offering smaller class sizes, a robust liberal education and unique undergraduate programs. Currently, more than 15,000 credit students choose from 13 bachelor degrees and 36 majors.

Mount Royal University is located in the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut'ina and the Iyarhe Nakoda. We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. The traditional Blackfoot name of this place is "Mohkinstsis," which we now call the city of Calgary. The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation.

About the Department and Role

Working in the Central Academic Advising Office (D101), Registration Peers are casual employees that help Mount Royal University (MRU) students navigate MRU registration systems.

Responsibilities

  • Create a welcoming, friendly environment for students in person and virtually
  • Answer emails in the advising inbox that are flagged for Registration Peers
  • Maintain an online booking schedule in alignment with scheduled shifts
  • Complete walk-in and virtual appointment tracking, as directed
  • Demonstrate to students how to navigate MyMRU, My Schedule Builder, and the Registration Landing Page
  • Be familiar with and refer students to use the online advising guides and mruGradU8
  • Support the creation of a course schedule that considers students’ academic and personal needs and aligns with the suggestions of their Academic Advisor
  • Understand the knowledge and expertise of Academic Advisors and refer appropriately
  • Make meaningful referrals to campus resources based on student needs
  • Provide students with clear and accurate information but refrain from answering questions for which the complete or accurate answer is unknown
  • Facilitate registration information sessions to groups of students, as assigned
  • Assist with other duties and projects within Academic Advising as they arise

Qualifications

  • Comfortable navigating MRU’s electronic resources including the MRU website, MyMRU, mruGradU8, the Registration Landing page, and My Schedule Builder
  • Enthusiasm to work with fellow students and a strong desire to help them succeed
  • Awareness and understanding of the various campus resources available for students
  • Strong presentation skills and comfortable creating and delivering presentations
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Effective communication skills
  • MRU student in good academic standing
