We are seeking a motivated Licensed Practical Nurse with a dedication for delivering compassionate patient care to join our team in the Emergency department at Chetwynd General Hospital.

Working within an interdisciplinary clinical framework in accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) Standards of Practice for a Licensed Practical Nurse and consistent with the mission, vision and values and established protocols of Northern Health, the LPN works closely with the care team in direct care activities such as assessing.

Planning, implementing, evaluating interventions, and coordinating health services for the Emergency Department patients.

Participates in discharge and / or care planning, functions as a patient advocate, and teaches patients and their families about illness / injury and overall health promotion and wellness.

Enhances quality of life from the perspective of the patient / family. Establishes, maintains, and enhances therapeutic relationships based on respect.

Under a team-based model, provides care to patients across the lifespan, and their families, based on stable and / or predictable states of health by initiating and following established plans of care.

Recognizes and responds to unexpected patient outcomes by communicating and collaborating with other members of the healthcare team.

Documents care provided and response to incidents in accordance with established policies, procedures, and Emergency Department expectations.

Consults, confers, and collaborates with other health care providers as needed.

Northern Health In-House Emergency Training Program Details Regional Emergency Department Education Program (REDEP) The Northern Health Regional Emergency Department Education Program (REDEP) utilizes a standardized, evidence informed on-line curriculum offered by Elsevier, called Emergency Nursing Orientation (ENO).

REDEP combines Elsevier's ENO online curriculum with a skills / simulation lab and clinical practicum to prepare registered nurses to provide safe and competent emergency nursing care, at a novice level.

Preparation will be accomplished by :

  • Introducing the basic topics, concepts, and practice guidelines that are fundamental to emergency nursing.
  • Developing the specialized skills, knowledge, attitudes, and judgement required to provide safe, competent, and individualized care to the emergency patient.
  • Promoting professionalism in emergency nursing.
  • There are 2 training positions available for 2024 / 2025
  • Northern Health provides placement support and funding for tuition, textbooks, and travel expenses for clinical placements, as required
  • Successful candidates may be required complete pre-requisite courses through part-time distance education, on their own time, prior to assuming this position
  • Learners should expect to make a 4 month commitment for this education, which includes online and in-person learning
  • Additional study time, outside of scheduled hours, may be required to successfully complete the program
  • Flexibility for practicums is necessary
  • Prior experience on an acute care ward (. medical / surgical) preferred
  • Current BLS certification within a year is mandatory prior to the skills / simulation
  • Preference for participants who have completed an electrocardiogram (ECG) course prior to beginning REDEP. (If needed participants can complete an Elsevier ECG module during theory)
  • Applicants must successfully complete the education program prior to working in the department
  • Upon successful completion of the education program, Northern Health requires an eighteen (18) month return of service in a regular position in the area of nursing applicable to the education program.
  • Qualified applicants will be considered first for specialty positions. If there are no qualified applicants, training lines will be awarded to unqualified applicants and training will be provided.

Chetwynd General Hospital has 7 Long-term beds and 5 Acute Care beds. Services include emergency, medical inpatient, palliative care, and respiratory therapy.

Chetwynd lies in the foothills of the Eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains and is the natural transportation hub of the Peace River Country.

Qualfications

  • Graduation from a recognized program for Practical Nurses and one (1) year recent experience working in a related area of care.
  • Current practicing registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).

Skills and Abilities :

Demonstrate ability in nursing practice related to caring for patients in the Emergency Department (., those across the lifespan with stable and predictable states of health - including but not limited to patients with complex disease, acute / chronic disease management;

mental health and substance use issues).

  • Demonstrated knowledge of pathophysiology related to common diagnosis related to designated patient group (., Malignancies / Cancers;
  • Acute / Chronic Respiratory illness / disease; Acute / Chronic renal failure; Acute / Chronic Hepatic Failure; GI illness / diseases;

chronic wounds, orthopedic injuries / conditions; Mental Health and Substance Use issues).

Demonstrated ability to perform nursing assessments and interventions related to common diagnosis and specific clinical situations relevant to the designated patient group (.

Cancer, Supportive Care, Pain Management (Acute / Chronic / Neuropathic / Palliative); wound care, venipuncture Diabetes management, first aid, orthopedic injuries, pediatrics, mental health and substance use and harm reductions strategies including safe medication practices (.

Best Possible Medication History, transcription, and patient education).

Demonstrated ability to make sound clinical judgements to provide safe ethical patient care to manage a select population of patients.

Has knowledge and accesses appropriate resources embedded within the service delivery model to support nursing practice.

Knows when and how to seek out clinical support and guidance as needed.

Demonstrated ability to recognize potential complications and care issues relevant to the designated patient group by alerting the RN and / or most responsible provider.

Demonstrated ability to effectively manage conflict situations and aggressive behavior and use non-violent crisis intervention, behavioral management techniques, and processes specific to the Emergency Department to mitigate violence in collaboration with the healthcare team.

Demonstrated ability in correct usage of equipment and maintains competency in working with, for example, oxygen delivery equipment;

vital signs monitor; glucometer; IV pumps; splints; dressings and walking aids and other related equipment.

  • Demonstrated ability to document patient care on appropriate systems / forms in accordance with organizational and unit standards in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide safe and appropriate telephone consultatio9ns and document related discussion and patient care on appropriate systems / forms in accordance with organizational and unit protocol.
  • Demonstrated skills in patient / family centered care planning, patient / family engagement and education, trauma informed care and therapeutic communication.

Has knowledge of legislation, government policies and procedures as it applies to the rights and obligations of patients and staff as well as the impact of social, cultural, and family systems on health outcomes.

  • Demonstrated skill in performing LPN Scope of Practice and standards of care relevant to the designated patient population in the Emergency Department including infection control, violence prevention, collaborations, communication, patient flow etc.
  • Physical Ability to perform the position.
