Position profile – The Emergency Department of Saskatoon is seeking Emergency Medicine physicians. The successful candidate(s) will provide services in three tertiary care facilities serving Saskatoon and Northern Saskatchewan. There will also be an opportunity and responsibility to teach residents and medical students training at the University of Saskatchewan, College of Medicine.
This individual should be a team player, be able to interact effectively with patients, colleagues, staff and management, and function well in a high volume environment with a commitment to provision of high quality patient and family centered care.
The Department : Emergency Physicians in Saskatoon practice across three different sites : Royal University Hospital, St. Paul’s Hospital and Saskatoon City Hospital. As such we enjoy a practice that has both high acuity and great diversity with a mix of tertiary and community practice. We have a group of approximately 65 members, the largest in the province. The Saskatoon EM group has a great diversity of practices and interests. Many of our members have strong ties to community practice and other administrative, educational and clinical endeavors. Our group has a strong affiliation and presence within the College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan.
Royal University Hospital is a tertiary care centre for Saskatoon and Northern Saskatchewan. This site is the home of our Trauma, Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, Psychiatry, Stroke and Neurosciences programs. RUH is attached to the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH) providing provincial wide pediatric care as well as Maternal Services. The RUH Emergency Department is housed on the ground floor of the new children’s hospital. RUH Adult ED works collaboratively and shares resources with the JPCH Pediatric ED team with EM physicians often having cross appointments with the Department of Pediatric Emergency (applications to pediatrics must be submitted separately). RUH Emergency Department has its own x-ray, ultrasound and CT Scanner. Annual patient visits to this site are in excess of 47 000 visits per year.
St. Paul’s Hospital is also a tertiary centre for Saskatoon and Northern Saskatchewan. This site is home of Plastic, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery as well as Urology and Nephrology. There are also full general surgery and internal medicine services at this site. This site is home to our Rapid Access Addictions Medicine program and SPH serves the core of Saskatoon. SPH has phlebotomy, lab, and a full diagnostic imaging department. Annual patient visits to St. Paul’s ED are in excess of 40 000 visits per year.
Saskatoon City Hospital is a unique site and is home to Ophthalmology, Geriatrics and the Women’s Health Centre. SCH sees a wide variety of patients including all ages and levels of acuity and is open 12 hours a day. SCH is equipped with phlebotomy, lab services and a full diagnostic department including CT. This department is a fast-paced site that requires transfer of consulted patients to the other two sites. Annual patient visits to SCH ED average 25 000 visit per year.
Position details – Departmental members provide 24-hour coverage at Royal University Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital as well as 12-hour coverage at Saskatoon City Hospital. We schedule on average 6 months in advance of a posted schedule. Our group schedules using a casino shift model. Our scheduling uses a positive-preference system for shift allocation; allowing physicians to request shifts they feel are more desirable based on individual schedule preferences. The group has agreed to rules for request-based scheduling and reviews these annually to ensure they appropriately meet the needs of the department. Shifts are allocated based on your Full Time Equivalents (FTE) designation as agreed to upon hiring. Shifts vary per month based on the generated schedule but over a 3-month period average to your FTE.
Teaching opportunities are readily available. We are members of the Provincial Emergency Medicine Department and as such are affiliated with the University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine. Our Royal College Emergency Medicine Residency Program trains up to 3 residents per year. Our Family Medicine Enhanced Skills program trains up to 4 residents per year. There are also opportunities for teaching in Undergraduate Medicine both core curriculum and emergency medicine curriculum. Leadership opportunities are available within the College of Medicine at many levels.
Members from our department are often members of the Trauma Team and Code Blue Team within the hospital. To join the Trauma Team and Code Blue Team there is a separate application process.
Compensation details – Competitive, independent, Alternative Payment Plan (APP) contract

Qualifications / Requirements of the position –The successful candidate will hold the designation of FRCPC-EM, CCFP-EM or ABEM and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan.
This opportunity may be eligible to receive the Emergency Medicine Emergency Medicine Recruitment and Retention Incentive of up to $200,000! The program applies to Specialist Emergency Medicine physicians and Family Medicine Emergency Medicine physicians.
Residents currently in their 4th or 5th year of residency may be eligible for a $30,000 resident bursary!
