Part-Time and Full-Time Swim Instructor / Lifeguard

The Opportunity :
We are seeking to fill a few Part-Time (4-20 hours / week) and Full-Time (21-35 hours / week) Swim Instructor / Lifeguard positions to work in the Athletic and Wellness Centre. Various shift times are available Monday-Friday between 6 : 45 am-5 : 15 pm and Saturday-Sunday between 8 : 45am-8 : 30pm. The successful candidates will join the Athletics and Wellness team and report into the Aquatics Coordinator and / or Director, Athletics and Wellness Centre.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to :
The Swim Instructor / Lifeguard is responsible for the safety of all students and patrons using the Athletics and Wellness Centre’s swimming pools;
Maintain direct contact with swimmers and communicates with them in an effective manner;
Provides instructional swimming lessons to various age groups following established curriculum;
Plans, organizes and implements lesson plans and evaluations;
The Swim Instructor / Lifeguard performs the very important task of being a first responder in case of an emergency and providing First Aid as needed throughout the pool and change room areas;
Monitor designated pool areas and responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the pool deck area, change rooms and shower areas including picking up equipment and storing it in its proper place in the equipment room, picking up towels and debris, organizing lost and found, etc.;
The Swim Instructor / Lifeguard also reports required maintenance and performs related work, as required;
Conducts facility inspections, completes opening and closing checklists, daily scheduled chemical tests and advises supervisor of any concerns found;
Perform administrative tasks, including swim report card writing, attendance, level progression etc.

Be creative and adaptable in problem solving through situations, and seek assistance when necessary;
Weekday staff will have a variety of administrative tasks to do during their shifts to help support the Weekend staff and Branksome Hall HPE faculty;
Assist with other duties as assigned, some that may be delivered outside of the pool area;
The ideal candidate will enjoy working with children, and be a positive, respectful and effective role model for all AWC swimmers and patrons;
Able to mandatory staff training before every Fall (October-December), Winter (January-March), Spring (April-June) session.
Required Qualifications and Experience :
Minimum 15 years of age as per the provincial standard;
Applicants hold current National Lifeguard - Pool Option, Standard First Aid & CPR C and Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor;
Must possess sound knowledge of the rules and regulation governing safety in an indoor pool facility;
Knowledge and practice of Lifesaving, Lifeguarding, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid;
Demonstrated ability to handle a variety of service situations in a busy aquatic facility;
Candidates must have the ability to make decisions in an emergency situation;
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to problem solve effectively, work independently with minimal supervision
Ability to work as part of a team with a wide variety of ages and demographic groups
Previous experience as a Lifeguard and / or experience instructing the LSS, Red Cross, or other Swim Program is an asset;
Lifesaving Instructor and Lifesaving Sport Coach Level 1 is an asset;
Pool Operator Certification is an asset;
Must have or be willing to obtain WHIMIS certification.
