GENERAL STATEMENT

Under the direction of the department Chair & Program Leader(s), maintains and repairs equipment, issues, receives and maintains tools, supplies and course materials. Assignments will be primarily in one of the following areas :

  • Automotive, Heavy Mechanical, Sheet Metal, Welding, Architectural Trades, Pipe Trades

TYPICAL DUTIES

May perform the duties of Toolroom Attendant I, as follows :

  • Issues and receives tools, equipment and materials, including manuals, videos and toolboxes;
  • Issues and tracks books loaned to students;
  • Assists the students in selection of prescribed tools and materials for shop lab activity;
  • Projects requirements for yearly supplies;
  • Prepares purchase requests using Colleague;
  • Ensures purchase order records are kept up-to-date;
  • Files purchase orders and monitors receipt of requisitions;
  • Follows up on orders from suppliers;
  • Monitors standing orders;
  • Maintains inventory of consumable items;
  • Prepares and monitors work orders for major tool and equipment repair;
  • Processes, receives and stores tools, equipment and materials;
  • Marks tools and equipment for departmental identification;
  • Controls and maintains permanent inventory and records of tools and equipment;
  • Reports any stolen equipment or materials;
  • Controls loan items to other departments;
  • Delivers departmental mail to the mailroom and picks up and distributes mail to departmental personnel;
  • Picks up petty cash and arranges reimbursements;
  • Picks up quickly-needed items;
  • Operates college service truck;
  • Operates the college forklift;
  • Maintains material safety data sheets (WHMIS);
  • Maintains cleanliness of toolroom;
  • Inspects hand and power tools to ensure they are in safe working order;
  • Performs routine maintenance and repairs of hand and power tools;
  • Refers accidents to first aid services;
  • Secures toolroom, shop and machine lockouts at end of day;
  • Relieves in other toolrooms as required;
  • In addition :

  • Maintains and repairs shop equipment;
  • Determines the feasibility of repairs and estimates costs as opposed to the purchase of new equipment;
  • Modifies existing equipment as needed to meet specific requirements.
  • Performs other related duties similar in scope and complexity.
  • The Toolroom Attendant II in the Heavy Mechanical toolroom will, in conjunction with his other duties, run the test center attached to it. This will include test supervision and Scantron scoring of tests as well as other related test center activities. Other toolroom attendants II may occasionally be required to relieve in this toolroom once training on test center procedures has been provided.

    Qualifications Grade or equivalent education with three years specialized experience related to the primary assignment area. A thorough knowledge of trade terminology, mechanical drawings, and tools and equipment pertaining to trades departments.

  • Must have good communication skills and ability to work cooperatively and effectively with students, college employees, and suppliers;
  • Must have good knowledge of current office practices and procedures and an understanding of processes related to trades;
  • Must have computer skills that include the ability to use the internet, MS Word, email, and file management;
  • Must be in good physical condition as this position requires constant mobility, bending, reaching, lifting, standing, etc;
  • Must be willing to take additional training as required : this includes Colleague and other computer training as well as Scantron marking training;
  • Must be willing to obtain a Fork Lift Operator Certificate;
  • Must be willing to undergo Industrial First Aid training and act as campus First Aid Attendant, on request.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
