Contract Academic Staff – Course Based Instructor Opportunity

The Department of Chemistry is seeking Contract Academic Staff to teach the following three credit hour course(s) during the Fall (2024) and Winter (2025) semesters. The instructor(s) will be responsible for in-person course content delivery and coordination with the laboratory instructor regarding the overall course assessment. Qualified candidates must possess strong teaching, communication and organizational skills, and demonstrate evidence of teaching effectiveness.

18 : 160 General Chemistry I (3 credit hour)

Fall term 10 : 10-11 : 30 Tuesday and Thursday

This course describes the fundamentals of Chemistry : The Atom, moles, stoichiometry, chemical equations, limiting reagents and percentage yield. Solution based Acid-Base and precipitation reactions are investigated. The structure of the Atom is discussed from the Bohr Model to Heisenberg and Quantum Mechanics. Trends on the Periodic table for ionization, electron affinity, and size for atoms and ions is discussed. The nature of the chemical bond is discovered using VSPER, valence bond, and molecular orbital theory. Molecular shapes and physical properties are predicted. Finally, ionic Equilibria; weak and strong electrolytes, buffers, and acid-base titrations are investigated.

18 : 170 General Chemistry II (3 credit hour)

Winter term 10 : 10-11 : 30 Tuesday and Thursday

This course continues the description of the fundamentals of Chemistry : The Gas Laws and intermolecular forces, Thermochemistry, Enthalpy, the First law of Thermodynamics, and calorimetry. Solutions; solubility, electrolytes, and colloids are investigated. Reaction Kinetics, rate laws, activation energy, and the Arrhenius Equation are discussed. Chemical Equilibrium, Le Chatelier’s Principle, and solubility product are explained. Thermodynamics, Entropy, Gibb’s Free Energy, and the Second & Third Laws of thermodynamics are investigated. Finally, Redox reactions, Electrochemistry, the Nerst Equation, and electrochemical cells are presented.

Qualifications : Applicants should hold a minimum of a Master’s degree Chemistry. Applicants may seek to establish an experiential / traditional equivalency to the Master’s degree and are invited to contact the Chair of the Selection Committee at the address below on how to establish equivalent academic or professional credentials.

Salary : $6901 / 3 credit hour course

Application deadline : July 15, 2024 or until position is filled.
